battery tray Rust!

whats the best way to get rid of/ prevent rust under the battery tray? Sand blasting? What do I do? What's a good rust remover?

I'm planning on relocating my battery behind the pass. seat while I tackle the rust under mine. I think it's best to remove the battery tower by drilling out the spot welds. You can then sandblast,grind,wirewheel the metal to see how bad it is. If it's bad I would cut and weld in new metal. You can then clean up the tower, reweld back to the car and paint with por 15. They sell those felt mats for under the batteries to prevent acid from leaking onto the car body. I think I'm just gonna leave mine behind the seat as permanent prevention

Well if it's not to bad u can sand blast it and patch with por or rust bullet. then relocate the battery with an optima one

I removed the tray with a spotweld cutter. Be vary careful , I went through the inner fender in a couple of places . I was having some welding done any way so I just added it to the list. I through bolted mine back in after I cleaned off all the rust with a sand blaster and metal ready and a generous coating of POR . By bolting in place using stainless bolts and locking nuts I still have por in between the supports and the inner fender . At least this is my reasoning. I also treated the stand well on all sides , which is nearly impossable with it welded in place. I have pictures if interested. send me a PM with your email address . Gary

With POR15 why bother? The best way to keep this from happening again is not only to POR15 the area but then go to a battery like an Optima.

those optima batters can take a beating. i love those things and will not go with anything else.

I get your point now. I thought that we were only talking about the battery tray, but yes your car can and will rust in many other locations if not treated and properly prevented.

Why do you say this? It treats whatever size area it's applied to.

Can you tell us how much rust or what type of progression you have? Surface rust on the sheet metal or big holes that need to be repaired?

Can you tell us exactly where the rust is - on top of the battery stand, under the stand on the innerfender, down on the front frame rail???

Better yet, can you post a picture of that area with the battery removed?

I wouldn't drill the spot welds out for light surface rust..

Once we know the above ... we might be able to make a recommendation as to the best approach...

i have rust thats cancerous that eat away at the firewall and battery area. If it's only surface rust i'd just sand blast it then coat with like por or rust bullet. U can poke around with a screw driver
