I am asking owners who has WASO key

Hello,

I have been interested in a WASO key which is for a steering lock,it is a longer key than a VOSS key. Please see my web site,

The first right key is the WASO key.This key should have a code prefix "FHxxxx".You can see the length is different from the next one.

I guess the WASO key was applyed for early HS30.

The second from the right is the VOSS key.We (early HLS30 cars like up to mid 1971?)

are familier with this key.Very early cars might have 2 types of prefix "FHxxxx" and "VHxxxx". Because VOSS took after WASO in late 1969-early 1970.So "FH " is not only for a WASO key,this is complicated.The overall length is shorter than a WASO key this means a locking system is completely different between them.

I saw the Safari winner 1971 240Z onece,I took this car's key and see the code and key itself.I was surprised this early HS30 got a WASO key,I am stupid I forgot the car serial number,HS30-00075 or -76 something anyway.

The key has "FH2xxx" code on it and also a door key is original one.Amazingly,they both are very neat.No wear no dents on the key gloove and key's surface.I imazined they have not been touched like daily use,so they still have kept good condition.

If some one has a WASO key,please let us know.Maybe early HS30 owners (U.K.,Australia,New Zealand etc.)have.

According to a service manual,HLS30 never got WASO type key.Only VOSS type key for HLS30.If there is a exception,I would like to see it.

What an odd thing is,service manual for HLS30 is showing an unusual steering lock in a photo of steering componets section.With very carfuly look at it,you can tell a buzzer switch is different and an ignition terminal portion is different from the one(VOSS type)we got.I think this steering lock might be a WASO key model and even with a buzzer switch!!

A Nov 1st 1969 issued service manual has clean photos on it,it is easier to see the details than the manuals later were produced(like the one P/N 99999-20016).

P.S. pictures of the Safari winner car and my hand and the WASO key(sorry for poor forcusing).And two steering locks are just comparison model between early and late VOSS key cylinder.The left is the earliest which got a completely different buzzer system and the right is a later type which got a more fat cylinder and a different buzzer system.So a steering column cover and an escushion ring for a cylinder and an ignition terminal switch,these are not interchengable.But a later escushion ring and a column cover may apply for an early cylinder without mods if you do not mind a gap.

Odd looking shift knob you have there. What are those buttons or lights above the fan switch? Is that bag next to the driver's seat OEM?

That's a picture of the 1971 Safari Rally car. Not a stock Datsun. The bag is not OEM. The switches are most likely for auxillary lights but I'm just guessing. I think he said it was the Safari car in the P.S. paragraph of his post.

Here is an old picture of my early key and lock parts. This was when I cleaned the locks for 26th-Z. Notice the key at the bottom right has a longer stem than the two next to it. The point at the end is sharp. I have seen this key in early Z ignitions. My key is the short version like the single key in the middle. The three blank keys are aftermarket blanks - not Nissan.

Hi,

I post this photo for checking the differences of VOSS key between original and reproduction from Nissan.

The left is original 35 years old key.The middle is came from Nissan which I bought it at local Nissan 4 years ago aprox 600 yen($7.00 U.S.)

The right is also came from Nissan last year I forgot price but some 600 yen too.The biggest difference is,the right one is not completely same,a finishing around my finger is pointing.The middle one is better.

This is a WASO key,can you see "WASO" on the face?

The tip is longer and this portion "pushes" steering lock mechanism.If you cut WASO key's tip,you can use it as VOSS key. So the Technical service bulletin said there might be a problem of un-desireble locking due to mix VOSS and WASO keys.I think that is very very rare case but can not say never happen.

Also the bulletin said VOSS key was applied from HLS30-00001.Then I think WASO was applied for HS30(of cource early HS30).

The picture from 1st Nov 1969 service manual showes unusual steering lock mechanism,you can see the exterior view is completely different.A Black round end cap is interesting.I think this steering lock is WASO type.I see the wires on the locking mechanism,but I think HS30 does not have a buzzer for ignition key.So this picture's steering lock is for HLS30 for Europe?But bulletin said HLS30-00001 got VOSS,mysterious.Or there is only one 240Z built in May 1969,this car does not have a serial number.I guess this car got WASO with buzzer switch?

WASO important about this key anyway? :stupid:

Hi Kats,

I don't know if this will be of any help, but in my experience of the UK-market Export HS30 models they seem to have used a mixture of both the WASO and VOSS types of key........

There does not seem to be any strict pattern to it as far as I can see. I went through my pile of old keys ( spares for cars I used to own, as well as keys from cars that I have taken apart over the years ) and there is a mixture of both types.

The Nissan 'R-DRIVE' parts book for the Export HS30 model seems to confirm this. In fact, the page from the 'R-DRIVE' book for the Export HS30 model appears to be exactly the same as the page from the HLS30-U parts book. All the part numbers and data are exactly the same, as well as the illustrations. I have scanned the page and attached it to this post.

An interesting little snippet about the Works rally cars; Nissan made these cars in small batches, and usually the cars in each batch had identical key sets. The thinking behind this being that a lost set of keys would be less of a disaster if everybody had the same set..........

Hello Bryan,

Yes! the WASO is important for me,I am very interested in it.I feel some mysterious atmosphere from it.Original early Parts which I have never seen generates my interest.

Hello Alan,thank you for the picture of keys and valid points of view.One thing about the Safari car,its steering lock escushion ring is painted reflectable bright yellow.Is this for the night operation?

I wish to see the key and cylinder of 1970-early 1971 HS30.

If the WASO key and cylinder are listed on ebay,nobody be interested?This means I can buy them easily without any bidding fight?
