Advice on removing exhaust studs...

ASA240z

Recommended Posts

Im replacing the exhaust mandifold on my 240z, I removed all of the bolts, nuts and now I need to remove the studs. I did a search on this but all I got was horror stories of studs snaping off and 4 hours of drilling them out. So I'm here once again, asking for advice form you guys about removing the studs.

P.S. I cant do the torch trick or welding trick to remove them, dont have the equipment to do that.

Thanks

I would suggest soaking the base of the studs in a good penetrating oil like Kroil. You might not be able to find that locally, but i've been told PB blaster works well. That should be easy to find at your auto parts store.

I think I used vice grips because some of the threads were too mangled to do otherwise. However, I've read about people sticking two nuts on the stud and tightening them together and then using an open ended wrench on the inner nut to turn the stud out.

Other than that, just be careful, and make sure any kids are out of earshot when you're pulling them - things may come from your mouth that are not fitting for their impressionable ears!

If you break one off, and it is flush or below the mating surface, I would just take it to a machine shop and see if they can pull them out for a good price. The easy-outs are very brittle because of the heat treatment to make them extremely hard, so many people swear them off. Once they snap off wedged into the old stud, good luck getting it out.

Sometimes spending a few bucks is worth avoiding a major headache.
