Posted August 8, 200519 yr comment_133367 My fuel pump seems to have quit pumping fuel. I tried to get it to pump fuel into a jar and it was bone dry. I disconnected it from the gas tank like to test if it was sucking and it was pretty weak. I took it apart and everything inside LOOKS to be fine :disappoinAny suggestions on where to go? I was thinking I'd try that RX-7 pump that has worked for others, but my local junk yard was no help there. I also found this little pump, but I've read it is reliable, but loud. I don't know if I want to spend $50 to find out if it's too loud. Or maybe I should spend a bit more and get something like this ? :stupid: Matt Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16822-fuel-pump-issues/ Share on other sites
August 8, 200519 yr comment_133435 Need more info, is it the mechanical or electric pump that has died? If it is a factory add on electric there is a filter in the bottom of it that may be clogged. If it is the mechanical pump replace it with a stock replacement. August 8, 200519 yr comment_133453 The PO of my '73 had put that model in. I couldn't get it out fast enough as I couldn't stand the harsh tapping sound it made. No amount of rubber mounting would get rid of it. In fariness, I don't know if it was just my unit or that's just how the Facet's are.I think the "rotary" models are quieter, but also more expensive. I can't tell if the second one you listed is rotary.I found a generic (not for any particular car model) at Autozone for about $30 that was much quieter. You can still hear it a little at idle with the windows up, but otherwise I don't notice it. August 9, 200519 yr Author comment_133465 it is a stock mechanical so far as I can tell. I rewired the whole car and there is a nice little lead for a fuel pump. I called around to find the price for a new mechanical pump and the prices are ~$150. I figured it might be a good time to spend the money to get a good electric pump, no?Matt Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16822-fuel-pump-issues/#findComment-133465 Share on other sites
August 9, 200519 yr comment_133467 it is a stock mechanical so far as I can tell. Matt No, the wires are a dead giveaway IIRC, a mechanical should be less than $50. If they want more and you're interested in a used one, PM me. August 9, 200519 yr comment_133470 Yeah, Daniel. Just checked both MSA and VB catalogs and mechanical pumps are $50 and $55, respectively. I think you can get them cheaper on Ebay. Thanks,Steve Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16822-fuel-pump-issues/#findComment-133470 Share on other sites
August 9, 200519 yr comment_133471 The MSA pump is not OEM but is probably good enough. I wouldn't bother with something that wasn't designed for the car unless you're sure it will work. If you went with the electric you'd probably also need to purchase a block off plate for the original which goes for another $12 which makes up the difference in price. My factory service manual lists the mechanical pump at 0.24-0.30kg/cm^2 or 3.41-4.27 PSI.http://www.zcarparts.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=11-3060&Category_Code=SFC02http://www.zcarparts.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=11-3066&Category_Code=SFC02 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16822-fuel-pump-issues/#findComment-133471 Share on other sites

August 12, 200519 yr comment_134016 I believe the MSA ia an OEM. It is the same japanese brand as the original and exact in all the details. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16822-fuel-pump-issues/#findComment-134016 Share on other sites
August 13, 200519 yr comment_134018 I believe the MSA ia an OEM. It is the same japanese brand as the original and exact in all the details.I'm just going by the quote on the MSA page that I referenced:"This is a very high quality aftermarket replacement pump. For Carburetor fuel systems only."You may be right in that it could be made by the same manufacturer that Nissan used but just doesn't come in a Nissan box. I'd certainly use it. I've even bought fuel pumps from the local auto parts stores. August 13, 200519 yr comment_134033 You are also right. It is not a NISSAN package but it is the same Japanese product in japanese language. I was searching for authenticity and it is.All the stampings including the company's manufacturer are the same.Richard Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16822-fuel-pump-issues/#findComment-134033 Share on other sites
