ezzzzzzz Posted August 10, 2005 Share #14 Posted August 10, 2005 Regarding the Mack truck BBC, I think you'll find this engine to have a higher deck height to accommodate a fourth ring on the piston. I can't be sure of this as it's been a loooonnnnggg time since I dealt with an early Chevy V8. These things weigh so much that it will be nose-ploughing in every turn. I'd be more inclined to look at a LT1 or LS1. Even a stroked small block would be a viable choice. The other major issue is the rearend. It isn't going to like the torque you'll be putting into it. A R200 conversion will be a neccessity(sp?) or a solid axle swap (LOTS of work and fabrication)!
pparaska Posted January 8, 2006 Share #15 Posted January 8, 2006 3. Z unibody integrity: Rollbar, strut bars and go here for more thorough drivetrain info: www.alteredz.com. Pete Paraska's one the best V8 z and z sites for information. Dudeboy, WOW - thanks for that high praise on my site! I will someday update it with more stuff, but HybridZ is the place to go when trying to get EXTREME Mod info on the Z. Chassis, suspension, brakes, body, as well as drivetrain stuff. beandip Posted January 8, 2006 Share #16 Posted January 8, 2006 Hellooo. Im in the process of restoring a 1976 280z and i wanted to put a small block chevy 350 in it. I noticed this was brought up several times in other threads but i would like to get questions answered as i go along. anyways for me finding a chevy 350 to rebuild wont be a problem at all. I just want to know is what i would do about the tranny and drivetrain, also what the weight difference is ( if ill need to do some stiffening of the frame rails) and where i could purchase the conversion kit or if i could make it myself. Any input is welcome. Send a PM to v8-240 he is in the process of this right now.
zman525 Posted January 8, 2006 Author Share #17 Posted January 8, 2006 thanks alot guys for all the info and i have arrived at a new conclusion, instead of slappin a 350 or 327 in the Z im gunna run the stock engine just modded. Custom headers, rebuilt SU's, stage 3 cam, timing chain kit, and if i ever get around to it, performance pistons. For some reason i really like the L series engine. They are easy to work on, easy to find mods, and i personally feel as though the L28 should remain in its home =) Thanks for all ur advice and im sure it will be very useful, but for now the L28 is staying unless i blow it or get tired of her and want more power. Thx again!
Project_BBZ Posted October 17, 2007 Share #18 Posted October 17, 2007 A BBC swap is do-able, but is by far an easy swap. I know this first hand.SBC is easily done and quite enough power in most cases.
240kconvertible Posted October 17, 2007 Share #19 Posted October 17, 2007 Don't give up your dream so easily, you can stroke a 360 mopar block out to 426cubesAussie shop selling the kithttp://www.pentastarparts.com.au/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1347That way you can have big block cubes in a small block V8 I guess that parts would be quite cheap in the US and I assume you could get a similar result from the 350. Bucket loads of power that the L28 will never manage unless 30psi is shoved down it's throat
