Need Info on '73 240 Z's

Hello All. I have reciently purchased a beautiful '73 240 Z that is mostly body, engine, wheels & tires.

I would like to know what other years & models of Z's are compatible to use for parts. Such as tail lights, door handles, A - Z etc.

This is my 3rd Z car. Right now my fiance' & I own-

'73- 240, '74- 260, & '75- 280Z's.

L 24 motor-

This Z car has rebuilt dual-flat topped SU carbs, I have been told that the flat top SU's on the 260's are not very good. I have also heard that the 240 had flat tops for 1 year & would like to know if they are the same or better than the 260's.

Does the '73 240 have the electronic transister ignition or is it the basic power to the starter to the ignition switch to the coil and go?

Any advise or tips would be helpful.

You can e-mail me at:staceyelcj@netzero.net

Thanx.

This question has the possibility to have a verrrrrry long answer.

First off this is in the wrong thread, 240K vice 240Z, so maybe one of the moderator folks could move it. Simple mistake though.

Most S30 Z's share parts, but you will find that the 240's are all really close. On the other hand you will find that they all have their differences. Your carbs are typically considered "undesireable", it just depends on what you plan on doing to/with your Z. The "desireable" carbs are the '70-'72 "round-tops". To my knowledge your carbs are the same as the 260.

I will end here to keep it simple, just use the search function and if that is unfruitful, just ask and you will typically get great answers as we have many very experienced folks here. Look for Ed, he just finished a complete restore on a '73 and I'm sure he can answer a lot of you interchange and year specific questions, but basically with exception of your bumpers and carburetors 99% of your 73 is the same as the earlier models.

Nate

Oh yeah, Check MSA's catalog and Victoria British's catalog as they mention a lot of the interchange and year specific stuff, as well as when what changes took place.

As CoastGuardZ mentioned the biggest difference is the flat top carbs. The '73 and '74 flat top carbs are equally crappy. Switch to early carbs and your 240Z and 260Z will be as reliable as the 70-72 models.

Your model has intermittent wipers (I don't know exactly when they switched, but the '71 and earlier do not). Your bumpers and over-riders are unique and stick out further than early 240Zs. You have an illuminated ventilation console.

You have standard ignition points and condensor like all 240Zs.

My buddies '72 does not have intermittant wipers. My earliest '73 does. Front bumper is different.

I think the easiest way to get all of your answers is to buy the clubs Microfiche on CD. It will be the best $25 or $30 you can spend. You can get it elsewhere but not of better quality. So, please keep it in the club.

Bryan hit it on the head, buy the Microfiche CD. Once you are able to get in there and figure out the sequence of things it will be a piece of cake to determine if this or that part was the same for what years and production dates.

As far as the intermittent wipers, they started with the 73's, but you need to check a couple of rule-of-thumb tell-tale marks. If it has the illuminated Heater Control Panel then there's a good chance that it does have the int. wipers. If the wiring system had all of the relays, solenoids and blinkers all on one main "panel" on the passenger kick panel, then that's also a good sign. Of course if the wiper knob on the Combination Switch has 3 dots instead of just 2, then it at least has the Stalk.

FWIW

For the most part the '73 , of which I own one , is alike the early 240s only it has the emissions carbs . Dump them ! Keep the '73 intake manifold. you need the center rods of the eailer carb linkage, not the same length. Also you should get the earlier air filter assembly as well. They are tuned for performance. The ignition of the '73 is old school with points , I went to a '80 ZX electronic dist and coil , vary hard to beat. I found one at the bone yard for $75. complete with coil and plug wires . If you go this rout be sure to also get the mount the dist bolts to . The eailer 240 one wont work. There is a Tec on installation of this set up . FAR superior to the old set up. Almost all the parts for your '73 are common to the eailer 240s . There is some minor trim parts that are different . It depends if you are strickly looking for a specific part that is concours right. Or If you are owned by a dailey driver, LOL Gary

Hey everyone. Michael & I really want to thank you for taking the time to give a response. I'm sure all of it will come in very handy. And believe me - if we have any problems I will be back here for more advise.

Just got her home today, started cleaning her up and find out exactly what we have.

Thanx,

Stacey & Michael
