Posted August 13, 200519 yr comment_134060 Well I finally got the top half of the engine apart and here is what I have found, (so far). Well first of all I broke of one of the head bolts eeeek . Then I found that the #5 injector tip was cracked. The exhaust manifold was cracked right down the middle, the exhaust stud was broken off (not by me). And I also took the intake in to have it bored out for the new throttle body which is going to cost 200.00. And I always wondered why my car ran like s--t, now I know. Well tomorrow is half off at pick and pull so I will be heading down there to get an exhaust manifold and a head bolt and whatever else I need for the 5 speed swap. My question is what type or year Z injectors will work on my 78. Thanks in advance Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16888-engine-coming-apart-problems/ Share on other sites
August 13, 200519 yr comment_134068 First of all, use new head bolts. 75-83 Non turbo injectors are all the same. Also 79 and up exhaust manifolds will have oxygen sensors on them so you might want to stick to 75-78 for that. August 13, 200519 yr Author comment_134071 Thanks for the reply. Do you know where to get new head bolts for it. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16888-engine-coming-apart-problems/#findComment-134071 Share on other sites
August 13, 200519 yr comment_134072 Do a search. Nissan has them but I think you can get them for less. I seem to remember that being discussed some time ago. August 13, 200519 yr comment_134074 for my 280 i went to a pick n pull for my fuel injector and i ganked one off a 81 z and its working fine. I THINK they are compatible from 1983 and below however i could be wrong. Take the # 5 injector with u and just match it up with something there. Hope this helps! August 13, 200519 yr comment_134075 I agree, use new head bolts. MSA sells them also try your local parts store. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16888-engine-coming-apart-problems/#findComment-134075 Share on other sites
August 14, 200519 yr Author comment_134093 I found some head bolts after I wrote that question at courtesy nissan (expensive but good) http://www.courtesyparts.com/index.html I was able to get the head bolt out too, it had enough bolt left on it to grab it with a pipe wrench (gotta love em). I went ahead and ordered me a new fuel rail also new fuel injector gaskets :classic: . I went to pick and pull and got a fuel injector, the fuel injector cooler/blower dont know how good they work but it was half off and got a 240sx throttle body boot and the pedal assembly which doesnt work and another 240sx throttle body, I got it all for 61.00 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16888-engine-coming-apart-problems/#findComment-134093 Share on other sites
August 14, 200519 yr comment_134095 I was never sold on the 280ZX 'injector cooler'. My 280 doesn't have one and neither does my 810 and that has never caused any problems. Just more of the superfluous gadgetry that seemed to show up on the ZX. August 14, 200519 yr Author comment_134097 I have another question, how do you know the difference between a 2+2 and a standard 280z. I am still looking for a flywheel for my Z, that is the only thing that I need for my 5 speed swap and I need a standard one. If anyone happens to have extra one, please let me know. Thanks, Shane Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16888-engine-coming-apart-problems/#findComment-134097 Share on other sites
August 14, 200519 yr comment_134098 The 2+2 has a back seat but it also had a larger clutch and flywheel (driven surface) than the standard. 243mm vs. 225mm. It's also 9 bolt instead of 6 bolt.
