the ultimate question

I've been on here for the past month or 2 asking questions about all 3 diffent Z engines ( L24 L26 and L28 )

My story is like this for anyone who doesn't know....

I leav for basic training ( us army ) in 3 weeks, and when i get back, i will be getting a Z, just not sure which one =)

Heres what im looking for, something i can turn into an awsome looking car ( 240 260 and 280 all fit here ) something i can perform my first engine re-buid on ( again all 3 ) something i can mod with all the neat stuff ive been reading on the web ( triple webers, converting FI to Carbs, putting in a new cam, headwork blah blah blah ) and something that will kick the living $!#@ out of my couzins RX7 and every other ricer who dares rev their 4 cycl engines at me.... this is where i need your help....

What do you think would be the best? i've read that the L24 revs faster and higher than the L28 and L26, but the L28 and 26 have more torque to speed you up faster....i dont intend to track much im a street racing kinda guy who loves to go stop light to stop light as fast as possible and look as good as i can doing it...

Give me your opinions, its what i posted for, even if your opinion is " your an 18 year old punk" because thats true too =)

This how I understand it:

240Z (70-72), L28 w/ SU carbs, 5-speed, 3.90 or 4.11 rear-end. Best power-to-weight ratio.

The 70-72 yrs are the lightest of the 240's. The L28 has the most stock power (short of a turbo), the SU's keep you from having to mess w/ FI, and the tranny and rear-end give you the best off-the-line acceleration.

well the problem with that is im trying to steer clear of the engine swaping ( e.g L28 in a 240 ) if i get a 240, its gonna have a L24 in it ( unless it already came with the L28 or no engine at all which is a different story ) 260 L26, 280 L28...so, which in your opinion is the best to beat the ricers and the stang fags..

I would suggest getting a feel for a car before you go out and modify stuff. With a stock 240 you are going to get beat up on by other cars. But it is a good place to start, if you find one that has already been converted to a L26 or L28 all the better. If you have a choice go for a '72 240, they have (in my opinion) a better transmission than the earlier cars and can be changed to a 5-speed without much trouble. Plus they don't have the smog setup and problems of the later cars. If you start with a car that is in relatively decent shape, no major rust, and runs okay you are on your way.

Most the swaps are pretty easy once you get familiar with the car but it all depends on your car experience. A Z is a relatively easy car to learn on, I did! I warn you, Z cars can be addicting! :)

dont worry you guys will stay WELL informed ( who do you think im commin to with my car problems? :) )

I understand about the 72, however dont the 70 71's also have no smog? 73's also ?

I'm not to sure about the 240's i've owned a 82 280zxT before...but the early Z's are new to me.

The '73 240Z was the first car that had the flat top Hitachi carbs. Supposedly, it also had a redesigned head, although it was still stamped E88 like the earlier ones, to yield lower emissions. Although there are a few people who have been able to get these carbs to work well, most of these cars have been converted to early Hitachi SUs, Weber DGVs, or some other carb arrangement. Personally, I would stay with the SUs on a 240 or 260 because they are easy to learn, easy to tune, and are good for the budget minded.
