I don't know how to answer this because I either don't know or don't fully understand the question.

I also have a USA 810 (79). To test that theory I just pulled the connector from my oil pressure switch. The car started and continued to run so I would say the answer to that question is no.

Today's update: Went to Advance Auto Parts to get a Water Temp Sensor and enquire about Thermotime switches for my car and the early eighties BMW's. Water Temp Sensor was on stock -- No Thermotime switches. But that wasn't all bad because I was really wanting the water temp sensor.

Car ran well. No Problems. Maybe, since it was so cold a couple days ago, I had moisture in the gas lines that iced up, although the engine cut-out problem which occurred last week, I'm sure, is still there.

I will install the water temp sensor and see what happens after that. Then I'll back off from being so anxious and start testing.

Someone asked -- "Do you have a voltmeter?"

On instrument panel ? It no longer works due to me pulling panel and when reinstalling it, failed to plug something back on.

A hand held thing ? Yes, but bought it a long time ago and haven't used it in years and will have to refresh my memory.

But I'll take one thing at a time and hopefully rule out what's not the problems.

Sometimes, I seem to ignore questions. Some are over my head, some are absorbed. But then, all the good suggestions seem to be overwhelming to my mind. I have to settle down and just keep on trying what I think might solve the problems.

I did "kick the tire" and then took it to Goodyear last week to patch up a small nail hole. Although, now car ain't as smooth riding because of the higher air pressure, I feel better about it anyway -- And what made me really proud was the fact that the car made it there and back.

I've had a couple of similar problems with my 81zx.

Number 1

Failing fuel pressure regulator. Usually when I would stop after a hard run like just coming off a freeway it would die. The way I figured out it was fuel pressure reg is that when it was running fine the hose was very stiff to squeeze that goes to the rails. When it failed the hose was much softer. This must be a common problem as I've noticed during my recent junk yard divings that a lot of ZXs had shiny new fuel pressur regulators.

2. My timing would hop around and die.

The problem was the magnet ring in the distributor. It seems to be made of fragile material and over time it cracks. Depending on where the cracks were things may stay put over a long time with no problems. With virbration they would move a bit and cause the timing to jump. I ordered a new one from a Colorado Z dealer. Everyone else wanted to sell me a new distributor.

These 2 problems took a lot of patience to figure out and if you start easter egging you are going to replace lots of parts before you find them.

This switch stops the fue pump when the oil pressure falls to a low level (IE engine stops) or the switch is faulty and grounds the wire (same as no oil pressure) so if this wire is pulled the pump will continue to run, (I am working from memoru here)
