Posted August 21, 200519 yr comment_135070 Today I dropped the tank... You can tip the tank from side to side and hear the rust sliding around in it. Flashlight through the sending unit hole confirmed it - rusty inards.I completely plan on making this a badass car (350+whp) with a L28ET swap.Questions:- Should I mess with the old tank (take it to a renu dealer) - or should I just put in a fuel cell?- Will the stock fuel lines acoomodate 350 whp - or while I'm rebuilding the fuel system - should I go ahead with bigger stainless send and return lines. I'm not that worried about the cost... I plan on having this car a long time and I want to do it "right"- If I do put in bigger lines - do I need to change out the elbows coming out of the fuel tank for bigger ones?Basically - while I'm spending all of this time - I wan't to do it right so I don't have to ever mess with it again. Like I said - I'm not so worried about the cost. I guess - if you were to design the ideal fuel system for a 78 Z - what would it look like? Thanks for the Replies!!!-Tim Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16995-fuel-system-gas-tank-question/ Share on other sites
August 22, 200519 yr comment_135105 Check how much a fuel cell will hold, how it would fit in and how much space it would take up. The answer to those questions will help you decide. Basically the stock tank is more practical for general use, a fuel cell is best if performance is everything. On the lines, assuming your car has both a feed and return line stock, they are good for at least 300rwhp, maybe a bit more. August 22, 200519 yr Author comment_135219 Could I weld in bigger fittings to my stock tank and run -6AN and -8AN from them? Does anybody know how big the pickup tubes inside are? August 22, 200519 yr comment_135227 the pickup is 5/16" and the return is 1/4" (90% sure)...cause I just did all the rubber lines back there. August 24, 200519 yr comment_135452 My Z is getting a 350sbc put in it with about 500hp, and I decided to go with the fuel cell, if I were you I would do that also. and get rid of all the rubber hoses. if your going to have that many horsies from that engine you will need an electric fuel pump/regulator to get max performance and I would buy the cell with the sending unit in it already. my 2 cents.
