Floor Pan Question!

Hey Guys!

You have all helped me out before, so I know this wont be a problem for you...I am doing some preventative por-15 work on my floor pans as I restore my 77 280. After I pulled the carpet and the insulation pads, there are some other kind of "pad" thingy-ma-jig stuck to the pan like white on rice. I need to get this off, but how? Am I going to have to use a chisel or screwdriver and peel this stuff off an inch at a time? What is the purpose of these things?

You are describing the sound insulation mat we commonly refer to as the tar-paper insulation. Some guys have had luck heating it with a hot air gun and scraping it off with a putty knife scraper. Some guys swear by freezing it with dry ice and breaking it off. But the answer to your question is yes. You have to scrape it off inch by inch. My advise is that if is not rusted beneath it, don't scrape it off. I also advise you to not use POR, but suit yourself. I hate the crap.

I used a putty knife and heat gun. Its a pain to get off, but I found some rust underneath that I never would have found it I hadn't taken it off.

26th, why do you hate POR? Ive never used it...ive only heard praises tho...

the dry ice trick worked well for me or even waiting till it was winter and letting my car sit out and get cold. it seemed to chip off better and the tar mess wasn't as sticky as it was with a heat gun!
