240z question

Need alittle help i just bought another '72 240z it has been sitting for 20 year in a garage. it turns over very well, i changed all the fluids, it is getting gas but no spark. i pulled the coil wire off and there is no spark coming from the coil to the distributer what does everyone think i haven't had time to to get a voltometer and check to see if power is getting to the coil even but I will. what do you guys think has this happened to anyone else? i have to get it running by this weekend or else I have to drive about 150 miles to get a trailer and back again. Thanks guys i'm in a bit of a bind!

Verify the ignition circuit from the ign. switch to the coil your problem should not be too tough to find-not much between the two. Take a spare switch, coil, and an engine harness or enough wire to "rig" it. You should be running quickly.

i'm not to good with anything othere than a small block chevy, so let me get this, ok there ar two wires going to the coil, a positive and neg. the pos. is coming from the engine and the neg is just a ground. so i need to check to see if I am getting juice from the pos.? correct? there is a little box with two or so other wires that are hooked into the coil, that must be hooked to the ign. swith your talking about?? so thats what i need to check?? sorry for being 6 cylider illiterate!

Ok i need a reply fast guys im in a bit of a hurry. i have an hour and a half drive to get my other coil if that is what is the matter so please someone help! ok i tested all of the wires going to the coil they are all good but i'm getting no spark from the coil wire so this means it has to be a bad coil right?? thanks a million!

If the coil is bad I think it will be "open", i.e., no reading across it with an ohm meter. At least that's what happened to me a while back when I accidentally left the ignition in the "on" position all night.

I just went through this vary thing when reassembling my Z. There is a black/white wire also that comes from the tach that must also be connected to the coil . Other wise the coil will not fire. I know this sounds weard but believe me the tach MUST be in the loop or the engine will not run. Thanks Nissan . It has been explained to me why this is but I still don't really understand it , however it is true , trust me.

That is pretty much it-pull the pertronics wiring diagram off the site, and use it as a guide-the parts will be stock, but it shows everything in followable order.

Will , remember when I was having all the trouble with the ignition on my Z not fireing ? It was driving me nuts , I tested everything and all he components were good and still nothing. I ended up experimenting on a Z that ran , and as soon as I disconnected the black/white it would not run or start . I had spent two days trying to figure the damn thing out , remember . You sent me the pages of testing information for the electronic ignition. By the way thanks again. :laugh: Gary
