We are putting together some information about restoring Zcars. One of the items on the schedule is to put together a list of THINGS TO AVOID when restoring a Z.

While I've come up with a starter list, I figured it would be good to get the help from all of you.

If you have any ideas, please reply to this message and let's have a conversation in these forums. I'll start off with my reply to this message showing the list I've created so far...

Back before there were digital cameras, I had heard that if you come across an item that has some assembly complexities, take a Polaroid of it and put it in with the parts bag for that area. These days, a digital camera works just the same (except you will need to print the photos yourself). It will also make it much easier for you to generate the rebuild web page to share with the rest of us. :-)

This is a great thread to have going for anyone in the process of or thinking about rebuilding a Z. I am 70% of the way through my '78 280 resto and already planning my '71 project. All the items mentioned have merit. Quite valuable for me throughout my project has been my digital camera and "bagging and tagging" every small part, nut and bolt.

There is one thing that has been the ultimate helpful item for me, and that's a complete parts car. When you need a spare bolt or small item or simply to go look for reference, the parts car has saved me a lot of time and money. It also acts as a useful storage unit.

Here's one I discovered:

Avoid accidentally locking the neighborhood stray cat in the garage overnight - especially after a week of sandblasting. I found that sand covered rear hatches and floorboards make nice litter boxes! It's been a week and I still haven't gotten rid of the smell!!

Go to the local Pet Food Store (Petco or PetSmart, or whatever) and buy a small bottle of "Simple Solution" or other brand of similar product. Has enzymes in it that will kill the cat wizz/crap odor good.

Probably made you want to re-invent the CAT-a-pult!!!ROFL :stupid:

here's the culprit by the way - at the scene of the crime...

since it's all dried up by now I'm just going to sandblast the area again (once it warms upa little). It really caused a lot of rust to pop up on the floorboard!

I need a car cover....
