Posted May 20, 200222 yr comment_7473 Is there an electric fuel pump in a 73 besides the mechanical one? I think chiltons says there isn't but I've seen posts saying there is. My car seemed like it was getting fuel but then it would die and be hard to start. I wonder if that was part of the problem( I changed the fuel filter up front). The car had old gass in it that I drained. I would look at it but it is in the shop getting a tranny swap. Thanks again for any help you can give!Mark Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1706-electric-fuel-pump-in-73-240z/ Share on other sites
May 20, 200222 yr comment_7481 I believe '73 did have an electric fuel pump. If there is one it would be easy to spot via the right rear fender well, just look at the front of the gas tank where the fuel lines come out. It should be pretty obvious but if you cannot tel you jack up the back of the car for a better look. If it is original there will be a sheet metal shield to protect it bent at a 90 degree angle.Have fun! May 20, 200222 yr comment_7488 The 73's did not come from the factory with an electric fuel pump. The cars had a vapor lock problem due to the flat top carbs and emissions controls added that year and the factory was forced to recall all 73's. The recall consisted of a 7 blade fan, thermo wrap for the fuel lines and an electric fuel pump, and a couple other small items that I don't recall (there may have been a lower temp thermostat, and a fuel pump block off plate ). That being said all 73's and later cars will have an electric fuel pump. One easy way to tell if yours had the recall done is to count the fan blades. So yes, it should have an electric fuel pump. May 20, 200222 yr comment_7492 I love this site! Where else could you find than an answer to a question about whether or not a car has an electric fuel pump might be to count the fan blades???. Keith, I'm not needling you - I'm truly impressed with the knowledge that you and other members have and share here. May 20, 200222 yr comment_7494 Well Jim, the only reason I know this is because the first Z I owned was in fact a 73 that I bought in 82 or 83. It had a vapor lock problem and when I talked to the local Nissan dealer the mechanic asked if it still had the electric fuel pump and the rest of the parts installed in the recall. It did not have it, so when we researched the Vin number it turned out the car had never been taken back to the dealer for the recall. So, the parts manager got on the phone to Nissan and about a week later he gave me a big box of parts to put on the car. It contained all the parts for the recall, the 7 blade fan, the electric fuel pump, the line insulation and a couple other things. So, in effect, I did the recall on the car myself in the back yard. And lo and behold it didn't help, turned out it was the water control valve, so had to block off the water to the carbs. Did that and never had another problem with the car. May 20, 200222 yr Author comment_7505 I'm putting a 71 engine w/ SU's into it. If the electric fuel pump is not working can I disconect or bypass it?Mark Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1706-electric-fuel-pump-in-73-240z/#findComment-7505 Share on other sites
May 20, 200222 yr comment_7506 As long as you have a good functioning mechanical fuel pump you don't need the electic pump.Have fun! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1706-electric-fuel-pump-in-73-240z/#findComment-7506 Share on other sites
