I have a silver 78 Z. I'm looking to buy the original body side molding that was color-matched to the car. I'm not really concerned if the rubber insert isn't silver, because I'll try to get it painted. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find one for sale. Anyone have such a thing for sale?

Are you talking about the parking lot ding strip or whatever its called.

Now that it's been brought up, I could use a source for the vinyl insert, either the hard cornered "flat top" or the rounded. I am presently patching in pieces to make up for the shrinkage. The link Bill Ramsey posted is exactly what I need. I have kept a lot of the moulding over the years, but the vinyl keeps shrinking!

But, Z cars did not come from Nissan with that moulding-it was a dealer add on, call any automotive trim shop(not a parts store-they usually don't have a clue on this) in the phone book-they will either have it or be able to order it-Ed, there is a place here-I will see if they are open on Saturdays, if not let me know the color(s) you need and if they are in stock, I will have them waiting for you.

Are you sure they never came from the factory? I purchased a 78 Z new and I don't remember ordering dealer-installed parts. Mine came with the molding on it. Of course, that was a long time ago and my memory ain't what it used to be.

hls30 is correct, they dident come from the factory with the strip. Some were just put on with a peal and stick backing and some with screws or clips. If you cannot find a trim shop that has any try a boat repair shop , they use it for a rubrail . I leaded in the holes on my '73 before I painted it . But I like less of this stuff on a Z , just my tastes. My z even had a landow top at one time ! I had holes all across the top also. Just another dealer add on . Gary

I am 100% with out a doubt. The mouldings are not listed in Nissan Fast, or the origianl parts books-they didn't come from Nissan! They are a generic part the dealer put on.

If you didn't order the car, and wait for it just as you ordered, the mouldings could have been put on for someone else who was going to buy the car, or the dealer could have just bought and installed them for every car to get the best price(highest markup)

And if after trying an Automotive Trim Shop, and a Boat Shop, call a GOOD body shop. One where they do REPAIRS and not REPLACEMENT of parts. Then ask them where they get their vinyl stripping from.

When these cars came from Nissan they were fairly complete for a '70s sports car. They came with a AM/FM radio , power antenna, that was a big deal then . The dealers make big bucks on the add ons . This is why they installed mag wheels , air cond , landow tops and luvers on the hatch and 1/4 windows. Of corse the body shape and thin steel make it ripe for door dings , so this was another option that was added. In many cases you just took what was available . My friend wanted metallic blue and ended up flying from Los Angeles to San Francisco to buy a new '70 in white. It could have had air horns on it and he would still have bought it . Gary

Can we get this moved out of the 240K section and into the Z section.

Someone other than Alfa will have to do it, because he's on holidays.

These moldings WERE NOT factory installed. I bought my 1976 280Z new and there were no moldings on the car. Later on, after a few "dings" I had some installed by a body shop.

I just ordered some of that trim vinyl today.
