Posted August 28, 200519 yr comment_136070 Ok, here's a pretty difficult one to diagnose. I have noticed a subtle "roaring" noise of sorts when I get to around 70 MPH. It seems to decrease when you get up to around 80 or so. I just bought new tires because the old ones were about shot, but I had the noise with the previous tires as well, and thought putting new tire on the car might alleviate the sound. It seems to be coming from the front, but im really not sure. What things should I check our first? bearings/front end stuff/driveline??? August 28, 200519 yr comment_136085 Make any difference in sound when you make a long left or right curve? Could be your front wheel bearings perhaps.... When was the last time they were looked at and or repacked with grease? Are they adjusted correctly per the FSM (Factory Service Manual) in regards to the preload on the bearings? Just a couple of things to think about and or check out....webdawg1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17077-roaring-noise/#findComment-136085 Share on other sites
August 28, 200519 yr comment_136087 It's real common for differentials to transmit noise into the car. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17077-roaring-noise/#findComment-136087 Share on other sites
August 28, 200519 yr comment_136091 definitely check wheel bearings, especially a change in pitch with turns. off the wall idea, but could it be coming from your fan clutch or water pump? if the clutch is frozen and turns at engine speed, it could make a 'roaring' sound at higher rpms. if water pump, bad bearings can also make a moaning sound.just a guess, tho.bart Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17077-roaring-noise/#findComment-136091 Share on other sites
August 29, 200519 yr comment_136108 BY ALL MEANS CHECK THE FAN CLUTCH . If it is not freewheeling when cold get a new one or do a rebuild. When they stop slipping and lock up , they can come apart and eat the rad and hood , among other things . They roar as you described . August 30, 200519 yr Author comment_136273 I will check the fan clutch as soon as I can this weekend. How do you check it? if i recall, fan should spin by hand when car is off????im kind of leaning to the front wheel bearings, the noise does seem to change when going diffferent directions. its a pretty subtle sound, again you have be going around 70 MPH to hear it.Thanks for all the suggestions!
