Help please Rust repair opinions

Ok I found a '72 240 has been rust repaired and repainted should i stay away or should I look at it a little closer to see if it was done profesionally im still waiting for pics and more expliation its the "guy selling it for his friend " situation I did ask if I could talk to the body shop so opinons please --should I stay away ? or keep looking what besides the obvious do I need to ask about the rust repair ??

I think it is almost cheaper to find one with out much rust and pay the extra, rather that buy one cheap and have to have it all fixed, I'm speaking from experience! your a pontiac guy hu? I have a 67' firebird and my dad has a '67 GTO. good to see more of us here!

i cant realy give u a straight up response because i dont know if mine was just the "bad" luck of the draw but i had a 72 240z that was formerly rust repaired and it appeared to be fine, however after a month of owning it the rockers turned out to be pure bondo along with the quarter pans. My suggestion would be to find out who did the body work, ask them some obvious questions like "did u weld rot holes or did u simply fill them in with bondo" The Z i purchased turned out to have a totally rotted unibody (rotted beyond repair). Another thing i would do is possibly run a magnet across the car and see how much bondo is actually on it You cant really say stay away from them, but when u buy a formerly rust repaired car your taking a risk but with propper inspection of it you may end up with a better car than you expected, or the total opposite in my case LOL

if this was my car and i had it repaired and painted, i'd have documented pictures step by step of the resto job.it only makes sense, for your own satisfaction and for the future for resale. if he doesn't have pictures, i'd stay away.

All you guys are right on all counts. I did ask if any pictures were taken during the process of course he needs to ask his friend he is going to send me pic,s that I requested (specifically the typical rust areas and the floors) also asked for the body shops # it has all the earmarks of a bad deal once i see more pic,s then ill go from there im going to have an appraiser look at it though if it seems like its been fixed right we'll see ive got my doubts going to look at a local early 260 said to be from calif later today

What areas were rusted and repaired ? this makes a big difference . How was it done period . Professionally or not , how was it done. I have seen floor jobs that were just covered with matting and epoxy , over rust and all and called repaired. They shoot paint and or undercaot over the whole mess to cover it up. I had to repalce the floor on the passinger side on my 240 . I cut out the old rusted floor and installed the new floor, from Zeddfindings, and had it welded in by a certified welder . It is now stronger than origional and all was painted with POR on both sides . Would you walk away from my Z because the floor was repaired ? It all depends on how and what was redone on the car and how it was done . If someone is doing a car for resale vs one that did it for them selves. The likely hood of corners being cut by the spec. builder is grater than the other . However the do it your selfer can be a major pain in the butt if they dident know what the hell they were doing. You just need to look for your self and you must have the knowledge to what is a problem and what isn't . Gary

Ok well its had a drivers side floor from owner before the one selling it ,hole fixed in battery try area rust hole fixed in rear quarter around gas cap area he sent more pic,s before I go look the one thing that concers me is the dogleg area when you zoom in it looks like rust coming thru and the quoater isnt flush with the rocker panel in other words looks like this joint is weak and or rusted or overlaid
