Info needed about my 71 Fairlady Z

He said that he had a 5spd, but it does look like it is in fifth gear doesn't it.

I believe that the aero ribs were present on the 70-71 oem spoilers, but I am not positive. That is only a hypothesis that I have made from looking at pictures of Fairlady Z's that had them during those years. I have not seen a picture of a supposedly original car with the aero ribs 72-later.

From what I have been told and what I have seen, the decklid spoiler made by Classic Datsun Motorsports is the best reproduction of this spoiler on the market. It will definately give your car a classic look.

Welcome to the site. I think you'll get more information here than on zcar.com ( as you have probably already noticed ).

Giving an exact manufacturing date for this type of car is not quite as easy as the US-market models. For one thing, Japanese market models didn't have any 'official' notification of build date attached to the car......

However, dating the car is relatively easy once you know where to look and what to look for - and is also fun ( if you are that way inclined ). We have covered the topic here in previous threads, which are well worth reading. I recommend this one for starters:

Prising out your Tachometer and Speedometer to look for date stamps might not be all that attractive to you at this time, but there are much easier places to see date stamps. One of the most reliable places are the manufacturer labels on the seat belts. Take a look at yours and see what they say.

One of my favourites is the base for the interior rear-view mirror; Simply pop the mirror off its attachment ( that's a crash safety feature ) and see if you can read the white date stamp on the mount that is left attached to the header.

Body serial numbers for 'S30' Fairlady Z-L and 'S30-S' Fairlady Z models ( yours appears to be a Z-L, as v12horse has pointed out to you ) in the 1971 manufacturing year started with S30-04050 and finished with S30-08328. At a rough guess I think yours will most likely have been manufactured between May and July of 1971.

I'm sceptical about the low mileage ( kilos ). I think it has been around the clock at least once from the looks of it. Nothing wrong with that.

One last point I would make is that your car never left the Factory with those Overfenders attached. They would have been added later, either as genuine Sports Option parts or generic copies.

it this week.

Pulled the tank out today and getting it cleaned out, going to rebuild the carbs over the weekend, and hope to have it running again by Tues. It almost started today.

That's correct for the manufacturing period of your car.

Only the earliest Factory rear spoilers had the reinforcement ribs. Differences are detailed in the two 'Home Market Options' threads I linked in my previous post, as far as I recall.

As for the miles, I have pretty good documention that came with the car, the car say in Hawaii for about 10 yrs, with very little miles put on the car, when the prev owner moved to SD at Camp Penelton, the car also sat as a 2nd car for many yrs on base and never moved, after the gentleman passed away several yrs ago the car just sat on base for another 10 yrs. Like you say it really doesnt matter, but its cool if I can verify the whole thing.

The air cleaner could even be the OE one too.

If the flares arent factory, Im probably going to remove

them for the meantime and during some of the restoration.

Ill keep them just in case I want to put them back on one day.

As for Options on this car Im thinking mine has the

following:

1. Car Stereo (with Hitachi 8 track)

2. Clock with Stop Watch.

3. Reclining Seat Device.

4. Passing Light.

5. Fog Lamps. (whats left of them, the factory wiring is still intact)

6. Dual Exhaust. ( thats the full twin-pipe system )

8. Racing Stripe.(cars been painted so who knows)

9. Rubber Bumper.

10. Over Rider. (dunno what this is)

11. Rear Glass with Electric Heater.

12. Air Spoiler.

13. Footrest ( Assistant ).

14. FM Pack.

Hey Alan,

This has become another great thread! I re-read through the "Home Market Options" again...the CDM rear wing copy looks pretty good then...would you mind to scan a close up of the body color chart? Although mine is a 4/71 and the brochure is for '70 I'm trying to hone in on a flavor of yellow, isn't the '70 different than what showed up in '71?...I haven't settled yet on a color and am still considering options...at first I thought I'd try something completely different but my color testing is bringing me back to yellow...or maybe orange...or ??? Thanks for your help...

my car inside is orange, a factory color

outside its funny, theres a layer of lime green then the almost pink on top.

Has anyone heard of something called a G pkg ? from what I heard from 1 source that was suppose to come with the flares, special paint color and blacked out headlight buckets for starters.

That lime yellow I thought came on later in '71, the yellow I'm speaking of looks like in that brochure but your scheme is confusing, I thought the entire unibody(not the underside) was sprayed the body color. Mine originally was silver, I think the PO repainted but kept the original color, interior panels and the engine bay match...I then painted it white...is your color code sticker still intact? BTW, does your have a rear sway bar? I'd be interested to see how that was mounted...

I noticed the white body filler plugs where the "Datsun" emblem would be without the wing on the hatch...I wondered if they actually did send them out that way...I was thinking about filling mine over (...there's a part # for that...)

Those are the rocker panels, not the frame rails, and the holes are the standard fabrication for the S30 chassis. I'll make some other comments...

I agree with Ben and Alan that your car is probably the ZL model, probably because so many of the "options" are present. The ZL model included many of the items we see as "options". Your example includes several more items and judging from the age, I would suggest that your wheel flares are indeed "factory". They appear to be the same FRP material as the rear spoiler would have been. The headlight scoops would also be FRP. I am surprised to see the lack of headlight covers. The rubber strips on the bumpers are correct, however I am surprised to see the over riders on the front bumper. Does the car have a mesh grill? And how about the lower lip front spoiler? Would love to see a picture of the fog lamp remains.

Looks like you have a nicely optioned out ZL there. Best of luck with your restoration!
