Posted September 7, 200519 yr comment_137289 Hey guys, I have a 75 280z that I am restoring. I know the car is a manual because of the clutch, but I do not know if it is a 4 or 5 speed. The previous owner drained all fluids and such before I bought it, so I can't just shift through all of the gears to find out, plus there is no shift knob. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. September 7, 200519 yr comment_137291 it's probably 5-speed. is the tranny in or out of the car? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17183-is-it-a-4-or-5-speed-tranny/#findComment-137291 Share on other sites
September 7, 200519 yr comment_137312 Actually the 5-speed was introduced in 1977 so who knows what it could be. FWIWVicky Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17183-is-it-a-4-or-5-speed-tranny/#findComment-137312 Share on other sites
September 7, 200519 yr comment_137314 Let me make sure I fully understand. There is a shifter, but no knob to tell you what the shift pattern is? And there isn't any oil in the transmission? Is that the problem? If that is the case just push in the clutch and shift through all the gears. You won't damage anything at all unless you try to drive it with no oil. September 7, 200519 yr comment_137317 Vicky beat me to it. Unless the tranny has been changed, it's a 4 speed. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17183-is-it-a-4-or-5-speed-tranny/#findComment-137317 Share on other sites

September 8, 200519 yr comment_137436 5 speed from 280Z or ZX bolts straight on. I like the close gearing in the ZX transmission but in order to take advantage you need lower differential gears.
