MSA BRE rear spoiler-heads up

Just wanted to put out a heads up for anyone wanting to buy a BRE rear spoiler for their Z. I ordered one from MSA and it came with a mounting template made from cardboard for drilling the mounting holes. They are not accurate; atleast on mine they were an inch off. I fortunetly didn't trust them and came up with my own method off marking the holes to be drilled.My spoiler also didn't sit flush on my car and had them send me another spoiler. When I mounted it in the same holes I drilled from the other spoiler it sat completely ****-eyed on the car.That tells me that they are not all exactly the same even though the template is.I have to say that I had some previous body work that affected the flush mount problem and MSA did everything to work for a solution. They said they are looking into this with the vendor. Hopefully some helpful info for someone

Well that will be true with most massed produced parts, and especially if they are "farming out" the product to other vendors to make.

You are not alone in this. I have talked with a few people that had to make extensive modifications to their MSA spoiler in order to make it fit. Good luck with the spoiler. Hopefully the next will work out.

Isn't this the same spoiler that Classic Datsun sells? Has anyone had any problems with their's?

I wasn't so much pointing out the problem with the spoiler as much as the fact the template they give with the spoilers. They should give a disclaimer about the fact it might not be accurate for your car ;or something.And like I said the second spoiler wasn't EVEN close to the fit of the first one. I just taped their template on the car centered and then grinded some mounting hardware down to a point so when i pressed the spoiler down on the cardboard centered, it left two marks on the cardboard to drill my holes. Good luck

I can understand that the spoiler mounting configuration can vary by manufacturer, but if the shop producing the spoilers can't/won't manufacture them according to MSA specifications, they should provide the template(s) to mount their spoilers from. And drawing up a mounting template is childs play to anyone with cad experience. I produced templates for cutting MFD for a 8' X 6' desk without having a prototype or a finished model to work from.

There's no excuse for the problems you encountered. So much for "Pride in Workmanship".

Why is it that more and more now we are finding Z parts made half-arse? Most of the MSA exhaust system don't fit good and hang low, some Victoria British's body parts require extra fabrication/modification to fit, and so-on. Why is it with the Z parts aren't made to the same tollerance levels as other cars? Like, you buy a Honda body kit, it fits perfect 99.9999% of the time. Same with an exhaust system or other part. It's just odd.....

That is a damn shame. I was going to get my "BRE" spoiler, as most of my body parts from them as well. Who ever they have making the parts better wise up or make new molds. [idea.] Unless, we come together as a "club" and make parts ourselfs. We have a Headlight Wire harness maker, Clear covers for the headlights, Glove box, Some CF molders, A dashboard maker....I am sure we can figure out some other things. But, some of the almost unatainable parts are being made right here within our forum. It is just a suggestion. I, for one, don't like an over priced part with a Datsun sticker slapped on it that dose not fit.

The one the CDM sells is period correct for an early 432 http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18673&page=2&pp=15 but not "BRE"...he does also sell that spook from a BRE mold...his version has a little more lip material that actually can mount to the three holes in the frame member behind the radiator...I have not yet installed mine, there are six bolts for attachment: 2 along the width of each end where it touches the hatch and 1 on either side of the lock button...it looks to be well made, the bolts are molded into the fiberglass several layers deep..no template included but I don't think it will be a problem to get it to fit...may have to do some slight trimming to ensure the edges are flush...

To clarify the clarification:

The BRE cars may have used what is known as the '432R' style rear spoiler, but the 432R did not use a BRE rear spoiler.
