MSA BRE rear spoiler-heads up

The BRE cars may have used what is known as the '432R' style rear spoiler, but the 432R did not use a BRE rear spoiler.

Since the 432R spoiler was not widely available through Datsun in the U.S., and BRE, later Interpart sold these spoilers they were typically called BRE spoilers in the States by some. Although that coined name is not correct.

And the front "spoiler" was called a Spook.

Les Cannaday told me that the 432 rear spoiler is the Nissan factory spoiler. So when you go to a car show, you can say it is the same as a Nissan factory accessory. Also, I understand that the 432 has the flat area for mounting the rear deck emblems. The BRE rear spoiler was based on the 432 but not exactly the same and did not have the flat area. This is what I've been told. The BRE "spook" that Les sells is an authentic BRE spook since he owns the original molds. The "BRE" spook from Motorsport Auto is not authentic and is cheaper made (I've heard) and does not have the extra mounting holes as 71ZZZZZ stated. If you want authentic BRE, buy from Les only. I've been told that MSA has been copying Les' fiberglass and carbon parts (using the same fabricator), making changes and selling cheaper versions. Notice they sell carbon fiber hoods and spoilers? According to Les, he came out with that hood first.

Personally, when I can buy from Les, I will. He's a small company and seems to have his heart in the right place. I will be buying his 432 rear spoiler when the time comes, just as I purchased his BRE spook. The spook had a very fine finish and looks of good quality.

This a fit problem with the fiberglass. Again I have to say that the fit wasn't bad but the templates for drilling mounting points will get you in trouble. I asked MSA if they had any other complaints and they said no with the new vendor. A sale person took one home and mounted it up and said it fit fine. But that it hard to believe considering the difference in the mounting between the 2 that I tried.

I had the pleasure of visiting CDM recently...Les was busy but still hospitable, allowed me to look around...seems like he's really busy with Roadsters but there was an amazing Bob Sharp 510 and a beautiful metallic blue 240Z (3 x Weber) in process...that engine bay was SO beautiful, it was cool to see what it looks like "new"...CDM is definitely a good source for Datsun parts/service/knowledge...I debated the extra $$$ he charges for the 'glass parts but reading several posts about MSA's versions decided to go with CDM...thanks for the extra info, just confirms my choice...

Hey Brian,

Just checked out your gallery, is the paint on your 8/71 original? Curious about the muffler also...or actually twice pipes?...Your ride looks to be in really good shape! I'm curious why yours doesn't have the chrome bars on top of the overriders in the front and on the rear? My 4/71 came with those, I thought it was for crash safety regulations..was that only in California?

Les Cannaday is a good friend of mine. His shop is 2.5 miles from my home and currently I store my racing roadster at his shop Roadster Photos from Les's Website . 71ZZZZZ you probably saw a red roadster #33 parked next to the blue Z with TWM injection....Regardless, lots of research into building my BRE replica, Peter used the Nissan factory spoiler from the Z432. THE "BRE" Spoiler and the Z432 spoiler ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. I think we are all in agreement on what we are saying but we seem to go around in circles trying to state it correctly.

I can understand why there is a fitment problem on these cars due to the design of the part. I have heard that MSA has changed the mounting points on spoilers and that may be part of the issue. I know also that Les's fiberglass fabricator has redone several molds lately and that will effect how the mounting points are indexed. Most importantly, these are hand made parts and so there will be some discrepancy between them.

Finally, BPILATI brings up a good point. Les is a small business who wants to treat his customers fairly. I feel strongly about supporting his business and know that both my BRE replica and Bob Sharp Roadster would not be the cars that they are without his tireless efforts. There are Very few people that I have met that have been so passionate about a single marque. The cars he builds are fantastic, Craigs 510 (Bob Sharp Replica) several roadsters and Z's...I have seen them all and they are incredible.
