Posted September 9, 200519 yr comment_137570 but bought one anyways. I am picking up a 76 280z this weekend. Everything looks to be original, including the faded 305 blue paint. The owner told me that the gas gauge is not working. Should I be concerned? Will it be hard to fix? Thanks in advance for any responses. I love this site and am glad to be a part of it. September 9, 200519 yr comment_137575 "Should I be concerned? Will it be hard to fix?" Not unless you run out of gas I would try the float in the tank. But im not sure if you have to pull the tank or not. I believe you do. If you do pull it then you might as well take it into a shop and have it cleaned. Im not much of a machanic but im trying . September 9, 200519 yr comment_137578 Don't worry about the gas gauge, most Z's are notorious for incorrect readings.Has the Z been a 'daily driver' or 'just gotten running after 6 years of sitting'?Install a clear plastic fuel filter inbetween the tank and the pump if it's the latter. My gauge was reading incorrectly for a while until I actually filled the tank to FULL for a few weeks and the problem is taking care of itself. But, if you feel industrious, open the hatch, open the spare tire cover, and to the right towards the tailgate you will find a round metal cover fastened with two large Phillips screws. Remove the screws and the cover, and now you are looking at the fuel sending unit. Disconnect the electrical connector. The fuel sending unit is held in place with a locking ring, use a screwdriver or punch and LIGHTLY tap CCW to remove the locking ring. Remove the sending unit, and replace if necessary.Wayne Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17208-dont-know-much-about-z-cars/#findComment-137578 Share on other sites
September 10, 200519 yr Author comment_137580 Thank you for the quick responses. Wayne, The car is not a daily driver; maybe weekly driver. The gas gauge is not reading incorrectly, it doesn't read at all. Whether the tank is full or empty, the needle stays on empty. September 10, 200519 yr comment_137587 could be the sending unit; could be connections at the gauge.wayne - i wish i knew it was that easy! i know what my next project is... btw, welcome to the site! Not as easy on a 240. Not hard, but not as easy. Remove access panel from RR fenderwell, pull wires off of the sender, use screwdriver and hammer to unscrew the retaining ring, pull the sender out. I think you can do it with the tank in the car. You obviously can't do it with a full tank though.
