Whats up ya all, I recently broke my 280z harmonic balancer trying to get the balancer off. Well I ended up bidding an a 240Z balancer on ebay which I won. This is what the guy said about the balancer, I Quote.

Description

"You are bidding on a used crank or dampner pulley from a 1972 Datsun 240z. These are a great upgrade to your 280z according to some Z-specialty sites, as they are smaller in diameter and higher in RPM's. Regardless, this is a clean, balanced piece with the bolt included to attach to your crankshaft".

Does anyone know about this upgrade so to say and is the timing marks the same on these pulleys or is it different. Could someone please let me know. Thanks in advance. Shane

Hi Shane these should work fine however if you have any external accessories such as AC or power steering(Although doubt it on a 280z) you won't be able to fit it. The 240z one only supports 1 accessorie and that's the alternator.

It is smaller and lighter and therefore free's up some drive train inertia but all early Z harmonic balancers are fairly useless. They tend to break up and are no good for racing.

I'll be going with an aftermarket one on my stroker motor.

I'd say it would be fine on a street driven Z if it's in good condition.

True for most of the world, but the US 240Z had a smog pump, so the damper had two belt grooves. MSA sells the single belt unit as an upgrade, claiming it to be even lighter yet.

The original one for my 280z had two belt hookups and so does the 240Z that I just got, here is a link to the ebay pulley.

Does it look like it will work?

The important thing is whether the timing marks on the 72 part are in the same relative location as the one that you broke. If the marks are in a different place ............................timing the engine is going to be an "adventure".

There are at least 3 different timing markers (installed in different locations) for 240z's and probably more for 280z's.

Here is a pic of the timing mark,

well I guess the file attachment does'nt work. But when you are staring straight at the back of the pulley, the timing mark is at about 10:00 o'clock from the keyway hole, if that says anything.
