Wiring harness problem!!!!!!

Im trying to get my z to start so i can drive it to a paint shop about a mile away. I would tow it but theguy said it has to run so he can move it around the shop. (as if a z is that heavy). The only reason it doesnt run is because i tok out the wiring harness under trhe dash becasue i was getting all new guages and the dash was its own project. So theres so harness in it. im not really in a hurry to get that very expensive dash back in there so he can "accendentially" get paint on it, (hes pretty good i done work with him before, but im not taking any chances anyway).

Heres my problem:

I took just the harness (without the dash and all the guages), and layed it in the passanger side. I only put the drivers seat in. THen i started hooking up all the connections to the engine harness. I plug everything in and try to start it. IT just keeps turning. I try to see if i messed up any of the connections according to the diagrams in the haynes manual. Nothing is wrong. There are a few wires not pluged in but i dont know where they go. 3 wires (its dark outside right now, i;ll get pics of those wires tommrow so u can see). After messing at it for a while i think that maybe theres no gas. I go to the gas station and bring back 5 gallons. Put it in. Tutn the key and still nothing. cant be the fuel pump or the fuel filter. I just bought them brand new and installed them. Next thing i do is check if i have a spark and the distributer while my dad is turning it over. THERES NO SPARK!!!!!! i figure i must have messed something up in the harness. Ive check, and checked and im gona lose my mind.

Im not that good with wiring diagrams but i can understand them for the most part. ANyone have any idea which wire i pluged in wrond/didnt pug in that could cause me to not have a spark? Help please! I need the car runing tommrow so i can give it to him.

The Z's will NOT operate at all without the TACH in the circuitry (nor without the Ameter, IIRC.). That's how the coil receives input from the ignition switch as to which circuit to use, Resistor or Direct. (Remember, the engine runs on 6v when the current is going through the resistor.)

Check your fuse box and ensure all connections on it are firmly connected, and that the fuses are good. (Remove-Test-Replace) and NOT (They look OK to me-None are burnt out).

Check your wiring at the combi switch for the connections coming from the ignition switch.

The Accessory Relay on the passenger kick panel, needs to be connected and grounded.

Give that a shot.

escanlon is right on . I just went through this vary thing . I wanted to start the engine and do some adjusting . The whole car had been apart for over 2 yrs. I diden't have all the wireing connected so I just thought I could run a hot wire to the coil from the battery and ground the ignition , spin the engine with a remote starter button. No joy . I tried everything ,and check all the components . I even dissambled the dist , again . Nothing . Finely when I connected the tach wire to the coil , it fired right up . It has been explained to me more than once and I know it is true . but I still find it hard to believe. LOL

Just like its hard to believe that the same current that powers the high beams also illuminates the high beam indicator in the speedo!

You said it!

Actually, a careful study of the wiring harness leaves you wondering.....what the heck?

What do you think of Fog Lamps on the same circuit as the dash lights?

Hi

it is funny in a way to read this now.

After my Z was a reliable day to day driver with tlc.

I had wierd problmes with head lights and igniton and studyed all the diagrams I could get (not having the intenet as a resorce) I was confused, VERY CONFUSED???? Then after diging around I found some loose wires at the tach, adjusted the pionts and she ran fine.

Only now do I understand.

OK now for the strange part???

I had a bad ignition sputter, it came and went and got worse to the point I had the intire shop involved. (I did the Jim Russel Racing School Mechanic traing program, got to race, got to learn it was fun). Nothing helped

Then one day I took the black wire that comes out of the distributer (signal wire from the point and condeser) and removed the plastic piece that held the wire. I seperated the wire from any ground contact at the distributer (where the plastic piece was) with silicone and the car gave me no more ignition problems.

Oh yeah I did try to jump the coil from the batery and it did not go very well.

Electronic ignition is in the works but most imortant

I plan to rewire the car.

I am replacing my dash in a 72z and I thought the connectors would be obvious to reconnect since they have different configurations and colored wires. On the drivers side I have connectors that match but the wires going into them do not. I hate to connect a set of green wires to a set of blue wires, but I do not see any other choices. I have the same problem behind the radio. The color of the wires and/gauge do not match the opposite connectors. Should I go ahead and try these? I should have numbered the connectors first...

Also, I replaced the bearings at the top of the steering shaft. There is a spacer and a C clip that hold the bearing in tension. There is also a 3/4 circle c clip that I cannot figure where it goes, any ideas?
