September 13, 200519 yr Author comment_137947 Momtoya,You are right about the driveshaft, there is no other components than the yokes and the sliding sleeve.I have been comfused with the multi components of the half shafts.I apologize to all for my mistake. September 13, 200519 yr comment_137948 No worries richard1, just don't let those shops screw you.BTW, are you sure the vibration comes from the driveline? What happens if at 90 mph, with the vibration happening, you put the trans in neutral and let off the gas?I guess what I'm wondering is if the problem could be a wheel bearing or some component other than driveshaft, or halfshaft. September 13, 200519 yr Author comment_137958 Montoya,At this speed,I shifted the transmission to neutral (A/T) but the vibration is still there. September 13, 200519 yr comment_137986 You might also want to check the ball joints. Are the lug nuts on all 4 wheels tightened to spec? What about the motor/tranny mounts? Suspension bushings? Differential mount? Steering rack bushings? September 13, 200519 yr comment_138012 one thing you haven't mentioned, is that this is a pretty easy job to do yourself; replacing u joints is something all z owners should be good at, at least with the half shafts (I know I am)...Why don't you just do it yourself? just the cost of the u joints, and some good hammer time!!! September 14, 200519 yr comment_138059 i prefer a good vise, less 'wham' marks on the ujoint cups:classic:.definitely a do-it-yourself type of job.Never hammer on the caps of the new u-joint. use a pipe fitting that will fit the opening and pound on this . I use a old socket that I have kept just for this purpose. This way you wont damage the cap because you are only contacting the out side edge of the cap. One more thing about u-joints be sure to lube them . The factory only applies a small amount of grease that is ment to keep the needle bearings in place while you are installing them. I replaced all of my half shaft joints and total came to $100 for the four. I bought the best I could find . I know you can buy them for less than $15.00 each but I don't believe this is a place to cut corners. In this thread nothing has been said of the rear wheel bearings going bad , they can be a sorce of vibration as well. How about tire ballance and check the tires for round and while spinning them look to see if the tread is stright. I have seen this in the past and a slightly bent wheel . On my Z I eliminated the front end shimmy by just jacking up the front end and loosening the lugnuts and retighting them with the tire off the ground . Richard , the changing of u-joints is a simple matter and can be done in a matter of a couple of hours for all 4 on the half shafts. The drive shaft is as easy. Just a hint : before removing a u-joint a good practice is to mark the two haves of the part to be dissambled , either with a bit of spray paint on scratching a mark in the metal. This way you can reassemble the parts as they were when the new joint is installed . If you have never done one before the first one may take longer than I stated but after that it is easy. We used to pull these things apart just to lube them , now at least there is a fitting that will alow you to do this in place. When lubeing the joint be careful not to force too much grease into the joint . Watch the little rubber seal and stop when you see it swell. NEVER use a air operated grease gun . If you do , most likely you will blow out the rubber seal from it's seat and after this the grease will just fly out and the joint will loose all of the lube when it is spinning . Especially the drive shaft .Gary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17241-drive-shaft-u-joints/?&page=2#findComment-138059 Share on other sites

Using it, there is no "whamming" necessary in the hole job. Press Out, Press In, Done! September 15, 200519 yr Author comment_138182 First, I want to thank you Montoya, Beandip and all others who have replied to my tread with valued inspiration to fix my vibration problem. This morning, I took out of the garage my praise and joy to go to Harbor Freight to buy the tool recommended by Beandip to change the u-joints. A nice sunny day as usual in Las Vegas. After that purchase, I was in my way to pick-up my two driveshaft u-joints at a local parts store.I was stopped at the corner of a street at the stop sign of a dangerous street waiting for my right to go. Suddenly, a car in the opposite way on the same street didn't stopped at her stop sign (the lady was on her cell phone) and has been hit on her right side by a car driving around 45 MPH having priority. The impact dragged the faulty driver's car to my left front fender and door and my car slided 45 degrees to the right side.I was wearing my seat belt God Bless Me. I have not been injured seriously, just a broken thumb. The two other drivers are at the hospital and a less than a year old child has been saved being secured in the car's back seat that was on the driving priority (all safety bags were exploded but none on the faulty driver's car hitten from the right side).I am on shock and this is my way to calm down this evening with a brace on my arm.I am sad about the injured people and angry about this faulty driver with a driver's licence from out of state for maybe many years. She is not the owner of the car but she maybe the one in the worst condition right now. The other lady(right of way is older and may have spine injury)My fully original Z has been towed to the most trusted local body shop with experience in these cars because I know him for his restoration work.My heart is broken. The paint was still the original from the factory. The apparent damages are a complete crushed LF fender, torned bumper, dented left door, no hood damage, bented front splash pan. The undercarriage maybe something else. The body shop does business exclusively with Motorsport for Z restorations.Maybe I am lucky. The last appraisal on the car goes back to 09/01 for $18,000.00 as replacement value as a collector's carPlease, any advise to handle this situation with the faulty driver's insurance company(Progressive) would be appreciated. They will not care because it is a 72 without any value for them. I am insured with Allstate for full value replacement.Any personal message and suggestions how to handle this situation should be welcomed.
