Posted September 19, 200519 yr comment_138587 Hello all. I am new to this forum and I have decided to start off my first entry (question) with what i feel is a very rookie question--Why does an L28 make less HP than a L24?To my understanding, the fuel-injected L28 makes less HP because of "an increase in smog emissions requirements(back in '74)." So, I assummed that removing all of the egr and smog stuff would make for an immediate HP gain. But, I read that this in fact does not icrease HP and could even lead to a decrease in HP. Any info relating to this would be greatly appreciated since the answer to this question has evaded me for so long.BTW, I currently do not own a Z, but I am planning on purchasing one soon.Specifically, I am planning on swapping a 280xt engine into an early Z. Still looking for the right one! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17310-why-does-an-l28-make-less-hp-than-a-l24/ Share on other sites
September 19, 200519 yr comment_138589 Define less.Read these links with regard to net and gross horsepower:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepowerhttp://neptune.spacebears.com/opine/horsepwr.htmlI'm not sure when Nissan started using SAE net horsepower for rating their engines, but I know that the 2.4L is a gross horsepower rating. September 19, 200519 yr comment_138593 I think Nissan made the change from gross to net in 1979. The 78 L28E was rated at 170HP/5600RPM vs 150HP/6000RPM for the L24, both of which are net HP. The lower HP ratings for the L28E began in 1979. If you are putting in a 280zx turbo motor, isn't this discussion rather pointless, as the zxt can make alot more power than either the L24 or L28.
