After Market Seats - Recaro's

Hi everyone,

This thread is probably more to do with Australian Road laws and such but If you have any good ideas feel free to suggest them.

Recently I bought a set of Recaro's(See my gallery). I have pulled the old seats out and done a few measurements(don't have those here). The seats should fit fine but the rails I have will either require redrilling of the seat mounts(attached to the floor) because they are longer and wider.

The Vicroads website requires that the car mst be inspected and given a certificate of approval for a change in seats that are not offered by the manufacturer. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrne/vrne5nav.nsf/childdocs/-6F89CFC1046661B5CA256FD300241BFA-E4CFA420ED0C17EBCA256FD300241C06-20A4F4183BEE40ADCA25700300139ABB?open

I am wondering what others have done? Did you make a custom bracket? Did you reuse the original rails? I am assuming you should use high tensile bolts.

Just want to get some ideas of how you guys went about it or if there is a bolt in solution. :classic:

Here in NZ we have to go through the same Cert process if you modify the seat mounts etc. However I am not 100% sure if we have to if you use the original mounts on the body work (ie if you make a adapter plate from the seats mounts to the original rails and use the recommended grade bolts etc). I think you are doing the right thing by asking others (I assume you are looking for answers from the Oz members) who have done the same.

Good luck....and nice seats by the way :):D

Legally you will need an engineers certificate in Victoria.

You would be unlucky to be picked up on it, however if you are doing things properly you will have to consult an engineer to find out what he will pass before you waste any time of effort doing something that is ineligible.

I have seen rails here in Japan that suit SR recaros to S30 chassis. They are too heave to be worthwhile shipping though. Perhaps contact ideal in moorabbin, I think they are the recaro distributor.

I gave them a call looks like another $300-$400 just to get the brackets made up and new set of rails.

I've had a look at using the original rails but due to the the fact that the Recaro's rail locations are about 2-3inch further apart the rears will definately need redrilling and im not sure if there is enough steel left there.

It's hard to explain but I think I have to draw it all up on draft paper with measurements and plan it.

Hi Gav, those are great seats. My friend's Bluebird has very similar seats to yours and they are very comfortable and supportive. He had to get custom made rails. If you would like I could talk to him about what he did and how much it cost.

Congrats on the seats.

Gav:

Check my galley. I have Recaro's installed and with the brackets pictured I am able to drop in stock or Recaro seats in a matter of minutes.

Ken

Hi Ken thanks for that, I had sort of come up with a similar idea in my head. I am thinking of making up some measurements and then building the rails to suit.

I really like what you have done with your car and the cloth you chose well done top job.

Hi Ben I know of a place in Japan that has seat rails to suit the S30 and I believe they will cost $300 AUD for the pair. I think I'm better off going local or building them myself.

I'm glad you like them I'm very fussy about the way seats should look in a Z and i haven't liked many I've seen in the past. I'm sure you remember I was after the U0175 seats like Alan has in his lovely ZG. However I got these Recaro's for what would probably be the cost of one of those seats before shipping to AUS.

I have been thinking of redoing these seats in the U0175 style at some stage in the future but we will see :). :rambo:
