Plus , without the vents . If you had the wendows up and shut the doors it would hurt your ears , also you would need to slam the doors if the weather striping is good . Notice the vent covers are sided so that they draw from the interior as you drive down the road . If you reverse the covers or have two lefts or rights the wrong one could scoop rain , dirt or maby a YELLOW JACKET into the cabin . That could be fun . I have had one fly into my sleve while driving and having my elbow on the window sill . It is amazing how many times they can sting you before you can stop and take your shirt off . LOL Gary

in modern cars, how is this vent accomplished nowadays?

Basically the same way.

My Acura has the vents in the tail-light housings. Look at the side of an 88-91 or so Acura Legend and you'll note this diagonal "stripe" with a grill. That's the exhaust part of the vent. The cabin connects to the trunk via the grills in the rear window deck.

My 4runner has a rubber flap thingy hidden behind the side of the rear bumper. It is there to prevent your ears from popping when you slam the doors shut. Most newer cars have something like this to vent internal pressure. I don't think you would ever have to worry about that with the Z. Maybe when they were new....
