How much should a good tune cost?

I'm talking top-to-bottom on a stock L24 by a Z expert. Valves, carbs, dizzy, all filters. I'm considering have a pro do my Z cuz I'm a newb and I just don't seem to be able to get it right. My mileage sucks and he claims he can get me 25mpg. In the long run it would be worth a few hundred for a tune. How much do you think a complete tune will cost?

Hmm, good question. You could easily ring up a hundred bucks in parts if you are going to do a serious tune-up. Hard to tell what the labor rate is in your area, could easily end up being double the price of the parts. If you aren't sure about the carbs you could just have him do them and do the rest yourself. Adjusting the valves isn't too difficult, swapping out the tune-up parts is fairly easy and you would end up saving enough to take the family out on the town for a weekend get-away.

Too bad you live just a little too far away, or I would volunteer to give you a hand doing it here. I'm pretty rusty on the carb tuning but with all the postings here I bet we could get it pretty close.

I guess it boils down to what you are willing to pay. I'd say you would be looking at close to 300 bucks at least if he is any good and charges accordingly.

Just had it done 4/18 at Z's Unlimited in San Luis Obispo...No carbs....

Items performed:

Adjust valves

Compression test

Check and adjust EFI

Check and adjust timing

Check complete car

Adjust clutch pedal

Inspection items noted:

Reverse switch leaking

Vac Advance not operating

Timing chain loose (wearing guides)

Possible cracks in AFM boot

Minor play in RWBearings

He pretty much went over the whole car and we discussed many items when I picked it up that he did not note on the invoice.

I just got a valve-job from the Nissan dealer. Only adjusted the valves. I picked up a few mpg. I think I'm up to about 22 mpg now.

It's gonna depend on what get's done:

PARTS:

belts

plugs

hoses

cables

points

cap

rotor

condenser

gaskets

filters

fluids?

Add that to about $60.00+ an hour labor.

If you can do any of these yourself you would save a couple of bucks.

For one thing tuneing the car is by far the easyest thing you will ever do for your car , you might as well get a good book and jump in . If you run into trouble , here we are , as for info. just go to the tec. section just before this help section and scroll down the list . there is a wealth of infromaton there. and it's free. Read and or print off the info. take it with you and take a look at the project , if you dont understand what is what , post a question and one of us will help. seriously though like others said this is the easiest thing you can do to your car.

parts wont be that expensive, its easy to tune and do most of the work yourself with a basic set of hand tools.

save money and time and buy the video from Ztherapy.com

it will show you in detail step by step on how to tune your su's

changing the plugs, new wires, filters and and fuel and oil, oil change, belts, cap, rotor, points if you have them are all extremely easy even for the novice on a Z.

learn about your own car learn to work on it yourself and in that you will be doing yourself a favor as you will be education yourself in your own vehicle. you will save money time and if you need help we are here.

25mpg is easy to obtain in a Z thats stock.
