What is a favicon?

Ever notice how some web sites have a custom icon in the address bar and if you bookmark it? That's a favicon.

I thought those bookmark icons were controlled by the web browser you use?

Browsers have a lot to do with how they are used and displayed, but the favicon needs to be available on the server. For some browsers that's not enough, so identifying the file in the page headers is helpful too.
