240ZMan Posted October 31, 2005 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2005 I put a BRE-style spook from MSA on this last weekend and can't believe how much of an improvement it made in the steering. Even at speeds as low as 45 mph I can feel an improvement. At 85+ it's like a new car. The float that the early Z's have is mostly gone. It was a bit windy yesterday afternoon and the car moved around a lot less on the freeway at 75 mph. Even though I actually prefered the clean lines of the front end without it, the improvements are really worth it. I highly recommend this for anyone with a 78 and earlier Z. Of course, now I need to paint it to match the car... nice project for a winter weekend when I can't drive it anyway
Ed Posted October 31, 2005 Share #2 Posted October 31, 2005 Don't paint it. It looks good just like that. Gives it a little contrast.
zhead240 Posted November 1, 2005 Share #3 Posted November 1, 2005 is it the poly of the fiberglass spook? how many screw holes were needed?

Like you I like the contrast and being black it doesn't show up as much as it might if it was body-colored. But it also looks unfinished to me.Others? 240ZMan Posted November 1, 2005 Author Share #5 Posted November 1, 2005 is it the poly of the fiberglass spook? how many screw holes were needed? This is one is fiberglass. There are no holes pre-drilled. I used a total of 8 bolts.
Mat M Posted November 1, 2005 Share #6 Posted November 1, 2005 That thing looks pretty good. Is it on the MSA website?Keep it black.Have you had any experiences with air dams apposed to this? I mean, performance-wise?
Hypertek Posted November 1, 2005 Share #7 Posted November 1, 2005 does the spook have more advantage over say, a full on front spoiler?
hls30.com Posted November 1, 2005 Share #8 Posted November 1, 2005 Leave the spoiler black against the silverpaint, chrome bumper and rubber strips, it looks perfectly at home!!!Will
CoastGuardZ Posted November 1, 2005 Share #9 Posted November 1, 2005 Love the spook, my personal favorite. Black looks okay, if you're gonna leave it that way I would paint/clearcoat it in black. Personally though I feel that it looks unfinished when not painted, ala Honda Civic "ricer". Here is a pic of a silver 240 Panasports and a painted spook... should give you a good idea of what yours would look like.
hls30.com Posted November 1, 2005 Share #10 Posted November 1, 2005 With out the bumper strips, painted looks good, put them on, and I think the black is still better. Will
Arne Posted November 1, 2005 Share #11 Posted November 1, 2005 I want a spook for my 240 some day too! The perfect look for the early cars. Black is fine, but I agree with one of the previous posts that it might look better painted black instead of the black gel coat.Side note - I've heard that Canaday's spooks (from the original BRE mold) are nicer than MSA's. Anyone seen both in person?
240ZMan Posted November 1, 2005 Author Share #12 Posted November 1, 2005 does the spook have more advantage over say, a full on front spoiler? The spook works by reducing the flow of air under the car. So I would expect you would get similar results from an air dam, perhaps a little better if it blocked more of the airflow. But then there's the other side of the coin of how much drag it adds. As I understand it, the spook-style adds very little drag and blocks a lot of the under-car airflow as well.
