November 4, 200519 yr comment_144496 78 280Z CAR, your air regulator has 2 hoses on it under one of them is the connection if this is loose its probly the problem. Mine would just pull out of the regulator housing. This should be sealed tight on to the regulator. If its loose you probly need a new one. I found a used one it was more cost effective. Good Luck, John Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144496 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr Author comment_144550 The connection is not loose at all. There is voltage going to it. I think it is stuck closed. I took it off and tried it plugged in while it was cold but it would stay closed. Is'nt it suppose to be open while the car is cold? Also, I drove it home teday and the speedometer said I was going 70 but my mother in law told me I was only going 60. I just did a auto to 5 speed swap do I have the wrong speedo gear and what color gear do I need for the five speed? Thanks, Shane Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144550 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr comment_144552 Yep, that test is originally from my FSM (1977)Only way I can answer your speedometer question is to know which differential you got? It doesn't matter which year Z trans. you have. (77-83) The speedometer is metered by the cog on the end of the speedo cable that threads into the transmission and is paired with the differential only. November 5, 200519 yr Author comment_144556 I have an R-180 diffy. That is what I meant was the cog that hooks up inside the tranny from the cable. I didnt explain it good enough, my bad. November 5, 200519 yr comment_144559 So you have the original diff. correct? Gear ratio 3.36?If so then you will need the 16 tooth cog Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144559 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr Author comment_144561 Someone told me I might have a 4:11 rear end, but other than that I dont really know. Arent the cogs all color coded like green, white etc. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144561 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr comment_144563 Usually they are the yellow. Still count each tooth to make certain. If you have a R180 then you don't have a 4.11 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144563 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr Author comment_144568 I used the cog that was already in the 5 speed, when I got it from pick and pull I just left the cog in there. It seems to run at a normal speed range when I am driving around in the city. It is just when I am on the freeway that it revs or is at a different speed. I will check the cog that I have in there tomorrow and find out what is going on. Thanks datsunzsrule. Its pretty funny though I thought I was going to fast because of the rebuilt engine I was trying to break in and I was actually going slower. I Just found out that the engine has a hard time starting at first after it is already hot. :paranoid: . November 5, 200519 yr comment_144572 There ya go you have the wrong cog then. Most r180 3.36 (on 280Z's) were used on Automatic models and you left the cog in the tranny from the donor car which means you have a 17 tooth or possibly a 19 tooth for the 3.9 What 5 speed tranny did you get? 77-80 or 81-83 aahh, hard time starting at first after it is already hot huh? that pretty much tells me right there it's the thermotime switch like mine. Still don't hurt to test it if you want to make sure Glad to help as always Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144572 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr comment_144581 Actually the 5spds are 77-79, 80, and 81-83. Check out this chart. It will also help with rear end types and ratios.http://geocities.com/Z_design_studio Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144581 Share on other sites
November 5, 200519 yr comment_144583 My understanding was that Datsun used 3 different types of 5 speeds For U.S. Z CarsOne from 77 -80 Wide ratioOne from 81-83 Close ratioand a borg Warner T5 in 1983 ZX's Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17836-air-regulator-valve/?&page=3#findComment-144583 Share on other sites
