Posted November 4, 200519 yr comment_144441 While in the process of removing the intake manifold to change my headgasket, I noticed this little pipe became disconnected. What is it, and does it look broken? I never "disconnected" it, it just came off. Is it for heating up the intake manifold or something like that?Picture HERE Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17869-what-is-this-little-pipe/ Share on other sites

November 4, 200519 yr comment_144447 Can't tell for sure, it's a bad angle. But it looks like it may be the EGR tube. It should probably connect to the bottom of the dashpot (on the end of the intake manifold) that is directly above it in the picture. At least, that's where it goes on the '83 280ZX engine in my car. November 4, 200519 yr comment_144449 Looks like the egr pipe from the exhaust manifold to the bottom of the egr valve. It is broken. I don't know how well it can be seen in this picture because of the shield but this is how mine looks: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17869-what-is-this-little-pipe/#findComment-144449 Share on other sites

Is yours connected in there pretty solid? Mine just came off when I pulled the intake manifold back away from the head. I don't believe I broke anything, but It's not easy to see how it should be connected. November 19, 200519 yr comment_146469 I have a related question about the egr tube.I put an l28 block and exhaust manifold in my 240 and i need to plug the hole for the egr. I felt inside the hole for threads, but couldn't feel any. Since the manifold is in the car already, i can't look into the hole very well. Are there threads so that a bolt can plug the hole? If so, what size? If not, any other suggestions? I have some JB weld at my disposal.thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/17869-what-is-this-little-pipe/#findComment-146469 Share on other sites

Unless you were going turbo and used the turbo one? You need to determine what size the threads are and get a plug from a hardware store. November 19, 200519 yr comment_146490 Right. JB weld won't handle the temperatures that close to the exhaust ports. Is that little pipe segment connected to the exhaust manifold on the aft end? If it is, then it's the EGR tube. They break from heat & vibration. At least mine did.
