Basic 240Z vs. Late Model 240Z

I was consulting a wiring diagram in my haynes manual this weekend, and it has 2 different diagrams for the 240Z, a basic model and a late model. My car was made 8/72, so I'm assuming it's a '72 (my registration and vin number search also agree), so would this be a basic model, or would this be a late model? I would assume '73 and up would be late.

Which is it?

US Model 73 Z's began production around 9 or 10/72. Yours sounds like a late 72 model from the production date, but theres only one way to really know what is contained in your car. Best bet for you is to compare the two diagrams & find several differences in the wiring and compare them to your car to confirm which features are actually in your car.

My 73 has a build date of 11/72, I'm just parting a 72 with a build date of 7/72 and have seen just a few minor differences between the cars, most dealing with construction techniques, welds instead of bolts, stuff like that. I would lean towards the 73 diagram as model dates seem to lag the build dates quite a bit when it comes to things like diagrams.

Forget the Haynes.

There are probably 3-4 different wiring diagrams for the 240 alone. There's the Basic, the Early Manual/Auto, the Early 73 and the Late 73 (and Manual/Auto version).

Check your kick panel, and see if you have a plug in style box with several relays on there. If so, yours is a LATE 73. Intermittent wipers? then definitely a 73. If no Intermittent wipers could still be a 72 wiring harness, while still being a 73 VIN.

Get the FSM for your year of car and it will at least hone it down to two diagrams or so.

VIN search by DMV means NOTHING except that it was first registered in the year 1972. There are many tales of 1970 240Z's being registered as 1969 240Z's even though these cars were introduced as 1970 models simply because the first cars to arrive in the USA were sold in late 1969. Same situation for other model years.

The only way you are going to know which diagram to use is examine your car for features (differences) in the diagrams. And E is right, forget haynes, it's diagrams are fairly generic. Use diagrams from an FSM to get the real acurate info.

Note that these are for the 73 with the intermittent wiper.

Couple of things:

Oh yes it DOES make him smart, Bill.

The build date of our American cars is stamped into the data plate on the driver's door jamb. Although there have been many good points about the accuracy of that particular date, it is the very best for determining the information most people seek about the various differences. When a car was sold or titled has nothing to do with what wiring harness is in the car.

Skip the DMV. Skip the merchandiser's catalog. Go straight to the door jamb!
