Problem choking on fuel when started?

Hi people!

Am not much on here but when i do it’s because I have a problem....

I have a 76 280Z and just finished changing the thermostat (after drilling out the housing because a bolt broke in the housing but that’s a problem I solved but here's one I can’t figure out. After washing the motor and engine bay it started up fine and drove around the block to make sure the Thermostat housing didn’t leak then I parked it for one week and know I go to start the motor and starts fine but seems like its getting to much fuel and blows black smoke out and hesitates....If it wasn’t fuel inj. I would say it has a choke problem but, get a load of this! I looked at the Manual and did some trouble shooting and tried to find the EGR valve and WOW! No EGR valve and no smog pump and no PCV???? the sticker calls out on California Emissions but I bought it this way and the guy had it smoged but.......thats another subject...

is there another thread to look at on the same subject or is there someone out there that can help?

If I can’t do it am just need to tow it in a shop

My wife couldnt wait untill i had time to look at the Z so she took it to a mechanic and told here that they fixed the problem by taking the coolant temp. sensor and cleaning it (he could not find anyone to carry a new one) and puting it back in and putting in new spark plugs in??? this does not make any sence to me but!

most likely the plugs were changed because they were fouled by such a rich mixture caused by the cold start being full on . my 2c , but I don't work on injection just have two vehc. that do . You dident say is the car running correctly now ?

I'm sorry I missed this thread. I've dealt with that problem on one of my cars. A bad temperature sensor, or a bad connection at the temperature sensor, can cause fuel mixture problems by not leaning out the mixture as the engine warms up. Which would also explain the fouled plugs. New sensors are available but most of the time it's just the connection. We touched on this in the 'aging man with aging car' thread if you recall that one. Gary, his car is running correctly now (I think) as his post is headed with 'well problem fixed'
