J P D Posted December 13, 2005 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2005 Im building my 71 with the intention of racing wheel to wheel and auto x. Right now im looking into getting an l28e but wanted to know what you guys who race are using with this engine. Is the 5spd from an NA zx along with the NA r200 (3.90) good for the track. I want to know if I should buy a cheap complete NA 280zx for the engine/trans/rear end? or if I would be better off just getting the engine, then getting a 280z 5spd or the turbo zx 5spd and a different rear end? Z's are not abundant in junk yards around here so it would be easier to just find a cheap 280zx and get everything at once, as well as full wiring and rear discs. Just want to know what a good combo would be to go with an l28e. Im still a long way from completing this car, just want to get a good idea of what im doing with it. thanks alot
John Coffey Posted December 13, 2005 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2005 Before buying anything get the rule book for from the racing sanctioning body you intend to compete with. A L28 in a 240Z is only legal in a couple wheel to wheel SCCA classes, both of which require extensive modifications to be remotely competitive. zguitar71 Posted December 14, 2005 Share #3 Posted December 14, 2005 That depends on how the motor is built and the tire diameter. For autocrossing with a zx trans I prefer a 4:11 with my motor that is not all that built up (mild cam) and 22.5 inch diameter tires. If you have a big cam then you will need to be lower geared or if you have big tires (25+inches in diameter like 275/45/16's). There are a lot of variables.
