Leaky fuel tank connection?

Hey guys,

Please take a look at these pics. You can see that a small amount of fuel is leaking from my gas tank. It runs down the sides and gets all dirty and brown on it's way to my garage floor. I swear for the first month I had the car it didn't have this leak and I am sure I have driven way more than the last 2 PO's.

It appears to be coming from that hose connection but I am not sure. Does this look familiar to anyone? If it is from that hose, how easy is that to fix?

It almost looks as if it might be from where the tank is sealed at. You could drop the tank take it to a radiator shop and have them clean and pressure test it for you and see where it may be coming from. That color does not look very goog. Has some rust in the tank like most of these tanks do. I would Take it in and have it tested to find out where it is coming from. I think that hose there is just a vent hose and should run at the top off the tank. ther are some threads on here that tell you how to bypass this hose all together.

I've read that POR15 thread and that looks like a great way to go. I have filled it to the top once and gas poured out the bottom of the car so I think I have a cracked filler hose as well. Once the level went down a bit the gas stopped pouring out.

I get maybe 2 drops per week from this leak.

Where can you get replacement tanks and all of the associated hoses?

I don't think replacement tanks are available. The hoses are available from the usual suspects. MSA's current catalog has a nice diagram of the whole system on page 103.

The small hose you first mentioned is a vent hose , did you try and tighten the hose clamp ? Try this before droping the tank. I would first use the fuel down to a bout a 1/4 tank or less if you decide to remove the vent line from the tank. These hoses MUST be rated for GAS if you pull the tank to replace them . I would be supprised to see the tank is leaking , most likely it is just the hose . Now having said that . If the PO changed the hoses , which these are not factory, and he used heater hose , then the hose most likely is rotten and must be replaced . There are three vent hoses on the tank but this one is the lowest one . The filler hose has a clamp at the bottom where it conects to the tank check there to see if it isnt just leaking past the clamp and tighten it a little . there is a small triangle flashing held in place with three screws , just to the rear of the passenger side rear tire . Remove this and you will see the clamp I am talking of . Good luck with this. Gary NAPPA should have the hose you need , for the one shown in the pictures .

I dug into the vent hose today and it was quite loose. The hose clamp wasn't really holding the hose to the tank tube. I cleaned it all off and tightened it. Based on the small amount that is leaking I think it might just be whatever might build up in the vent hose coming back out through a loose connection. I think this will hold me till I can do a POR15 job in the spring
