I just picked up a 72 240z yesterday. I will try to get some pictures posted. I do have a question. There is a box on the inner fender well that has a the speedo cable connected to it then to the speedo. It also has a vacume line connected to it. The care is in good shape with nice floors and a clean paint job. It will be a great daily driver.

I usually refer to things such as this as the 'Jesus ____'. Let me explain. One of my first Z's was a '80 280ZX. Off the battery was th usual positive/negative wires. Coming out of the firewall was a small speaker wire connecting to the positive lead. I never identified it, but if unplugged; the car would not run. After sever hours with an electrician friend of mine, he sat up. Smiled, and proudly proclaimed it was a 'Jesus wire'. He explained it was a 'Jesus wire' because Jesus is the only one who knows why its there. His advice: if the car functions normally then leave it. So my advice: if the car functions normally, leave the box.

If the speedomer cables routes through this, it may be a set of gears to get the speedometer to register correctly if the wheel/tire diameter was changed from stock.

Reminds me of a friend with a VB bug who kept getting tickets. He couldn't figure out why the speedometer showed 12MPH slower than he really was going - he took it to a speed-o shop and they installed a gear reduction box and he was reading correctly since the tires were larger diameter than the speedometer was built for.

I'm not quite sure why it needs a vacuum line.

This is my best quess.

Went to the Nissan dealer to get shifter bushings and asked the parts guy if he know what the box was. Low and behold he said that it was cruse control. Now if I could only figure out how to make it work.
