First Drive

Hi all, Hopefully you all can help me with these couple of questions.

I just got my 240z running and able to drive around the block. I just put in a 81, 280zx motor and 5 sp tranny.

1. Is it normal for the tranny in first or second to make a whining noise in first and 2nd gears? It sounds like driving a Older Corvette, that's all I can give you as an example. I have never driven this car before. So I an not sure what to expect on noises.

2. I also put in the 3 into 2 headers and the turbo exhaust system. Does anyone have that exhaust system in ther rigs? I get a lot of loud crackels on excellerating and decellerating. It's sound like a rice burner in a way. I read some where in a post that at a certain rpm there is a resonance that this car creates with this exhaust system?

3. When you step on the brake are you suppose to hear a hissing sound from the vacuum booster. Some times I get a rough ideal typically at start up.

Looking for some input on sounds.

Blackjack , I recently installed a '82ZX engine in my 240 running Sus. If you are hearing a hissing upon aplying the brakes , I think you have a vacuum problem with the booster. sounds like it has had it. I have the same plumbing , 3 into 2 into 1 headers and a 2 1/2'' turbo , dyanomax , system. The resonence you hear about , is the drowning sound at about 2K RPM . by adding a glass pac mid way from the collecter of the header and the first bend will eliminate it. If you are hearing a back rap , it's like a controlled back fire . This could be caused by a rich mixture . You dident state what type of induction you are running . SUs , Webbers , Injection , What ?? Use a race glass pac for controlling the resonence , this because the '' cherry bomb '' type that have little luvers in the pipe cause a great amount of restriction . As to the sound of the tranny , just be sure you have the correct amount of oil in it . It could be wear causing the sound , no way of knowing not being able to hear it . Gary

Hi Waylon, I've got a MSA 6-2 header and the MSA turbo exhaust setup on my Z. It does tend to resonate a little bit, but I kinda like the sound. Not ricey like those cars you see with the huge exhaust tips!
