Two Identification Questions

SavannahZ

Recommended Posts

I was fiddling with my ZX distributor today and noticed an electrical connection I had not seen before. I have a 240 and the car runs fine without it...I am just wondering what it is for. It is in the first picture right behind the vacuum advance thingy.

The other item I'm not sure about is the yellow wire in pictures 2 and 3. The second picture is a close up and the third shows the origin next to the dizzy. The yellow wire was taped back and not in use since I purchased the car when it had the original points setup.

Thanks!

it would appear that a ground was added for the dizzy body. I have 3 cars with the matchbox EI dizzy and not one have this.

The wire was the original wire from the old point dizzt to the neg terminal of the coil. When i do the conversion, I tape these up instead of removing them just in case I want to go back to original. (Fat Chance! the EI just works too dam good)

Hi SavannahZ, here are a few pics of my '73 showing a yellow wire connecting to the temperature sending unit. The yellow wire has the same round connector as the one shown in the pictures you posted. That's why I think the yellow wire in your pic is for the temp sending unit. Are you using the stock temperature gage, or an aftermarket gage?

Most of the 240Z's I've run across in the salvage yards also have the yellow wire connecting to the temp sending unit.

If it's not the wire for the temp gage, then perhaps it was for something to do with the emission control devices?

As long as your temp gage is functioning properly and your Z is running well, it's probably nothing to really worry about. :)

I just looked to be sure, and mine has that same ground terminal as well. Looks to be original, but who can tell. Maybe only the later matchbox dizzies came with the ground terminal. The one in mine is from an '83 ZX and it still has the later E12-93 box on it. (I'll be swapping to the E12-80 later. Bigger fish to fry first.)
