Anybody building headlight relay harness?

I did buy 2 lights, so I plan on putting the other one in, it's just a pain in the arse.

Being able to see at night, or in the rain is a nice by-product though.

How about a new light in the right side? If its a old headlight it

will tend to be not as bright as the new one.

I hope you're not trying to do it the hard way but rather you simply consider turning the steering wheel to one side and removing 4 screws a pain ...

Just getting to the back of the headlight bowl can be tough. You can get the fender liner out, or loose, but the heads of the screws might be rusted, or the screw sticks, so getting those screws out, IMO, is the pain part.

If you do get those screws out, I suggest replacing t hem with socket head screws.

There have been many endorsements for how good a job Dave did on the headlight harnesses, but it doesn't seem like anyone is stepping up to the plate to make these things now that Dave is out of the business. VB offers a "heavy-duty headlight harness for the early Zs for $30 and features "OE style heatlight sockets for easy installation with no splicing or cutting required." I have read some posts that say the VB product is no good, but have not read of the reasons Z owners came to this conclusion. I would be interested in hearing form anyone who purchased the VB product, and any experiences good or bad they had with the product. If VB offers a good headlight harness, even if it is not as good as Dave’s, I would be tempted to give them my business, as they seem to be the only game in town.

I can't find it right now, but I recall reading a post from someone who bought one. The VB kit is somewhat generic, and apparently lists lots of Toyota applications on the package, not Nissan. Seems to me that it wasn't long enough for one thing, and required a fair amount of tinkering to get it to fit. I think it worked OK once it was done, though.

Actually I had the misfortune of putting one in for a fellow Z owner and let me tell you.....................

The "heavy duty" portion of it is crap. The thickest I saw was 14 gauge wire. We had to completely tear apart the headlight bucket in order to "plug in the VB harness"

In order to do that properly, you have to take the VB harness apart at the plug in order to fit the wires through the small hole in the headlight bucket. then re-assemble the pins back into the plug before plugging it into the headlight. The harness was clearly made for a headlight that has an exposed plug, Unlike the Z-cars.

The wires were too long and had to be rolled up and tucked away. and a little reminder that "the longer the wires, the more resistance, the more power required or bigger the gauge of wire needed"

All in all, it took me and him (BOTH EXPERIENCED ZCAR MECHANICS) 2 1/2 hours to remove 33 year old screws, tear the car apart, tear the harness apart, and put it all back together. And after all that the new H-4 conversion lights were not that much more brite than stock AND THE NEW HARNESS'S WIRES STARTED GETTING PRETTY DAMN HOT!!! The new lights were your basic 50/60 watt H-4 lights

Thats my experience with the VB "heavy duty" harness and the main reason that I designed and built the harness that I sold for over a year and a half.

Dave.

If any one is interested, I have a "PAINT" drawing of the wiring schematic but unfortunately it's 5.93 MB

Probably because it's in color but it's neccesary for the detail aspect of it.

If any one can reduse it enough to post on here, I'm sure we'll all be happier for it.

Let me know,

Dave

I've got lots of bandwidth, send it to me and I'll convert it. I'll PM you with the address.

Start with converting it to a jpeg format, and then convert it to black & white. I use a simple program called IrFanView (free) to view and convert all kinds of images.

It's in color for a reason, To differenciate between wires from one point to another. I really don't feel like redoing the whole thing over just to make it black and white. It's free to who-ever can get it on here or have me e-mail it to them.

I'd much rather have it made public. but thanks!
