Hi Everyone,

My name is Rob and live in the UK. Now I've been after a Z for abosolutely ages, ever since I went for a spin in one a couple of years ago.

But being a complete novice, I'm rather alarmed about the headlight issue. I rang the guy up and he mentioned that that the headlight container (?!) had rusted solidly and the garage he took it too didn't have the knowledge to replace it. Now not being clued up with the z, I was wondering whether any wise people could advise me on how hard a job this is. Apparently the headlight merely glows without much light being produced, and thus needs replacing.

There are a couple of other things, like a handle needs replacing, and some minor rust as well, but these don't intimidate me as much as the light.

If anyone caould give me some pointers, I would be eternally grateful! :nervous:

Headlight replacement isn't anything that would prevent you from purchasing a Zed....possibly negotiate a lower price (which I guess is out with ebay)....anyways, minor items that you suggested shouldn't affect the purchase. Minor rust is always something that I would go inspect and search this forum first for rust. Even a little rust can mean a LOT of rust all over the place, a lot in places you can't see. The No. 1 enemy of the Datsun S30 is rust.

Headlight is best removed from under the wheel arch.

You dont need to remove the front light scoop thing (the painted panel part), just the assembly that holds the headlight.

Might be something as simple as a bad earth on the electrical connections

Looks good from the outside at first glance but you really need to go look at it and inspect it for rust in specific areas. Do some searching on the forums here and you will find plenty on where to look. These cars are notorious for dim headlights and tail lights. Usually it's just a matter of cleaning up the connectors and eliminating resistance in the circuits. Headlight output can be improved by incorporating a relay into the mix.

Also you may want to update your profile with your location. There may be someone who knows what to look for on the car that can go with you or even go on your behalf.
