Hagerty Insurance "What's it Worth" features Z Cars

Hi Chris/everyone:

The "Black Book" is a listing of values complied from actual auction prices around the country... Most Dealers like to use it when they BUY, because it gives the lowest of values... Lets face it, if a car has to be taken to the auction - it's because it didn't sell on the Dealers Lot to begin with, or it was in such sad shape the Dealer didn't want to stand behind it in case of a retail sale. Given the source of the data being collected and reported - I agree with Chris ... they don't use the term "excellent" to mean anything close to a #1 or #2 Show Car.

FWIW,

Carl B.

If anyone believes that they have an Agreed Value, that their Insurance Company will honor without exceptions, and pay in full in case of a Total Loss... on their "normal car insurance policy". Then I would suggest that your read your policy carefully again, and go over it with your Attorney. (NEVER TAKE AN INSURANCE AGENTS word for anything - the POLICY RULES..ALWAYS!)

In order for the Hagerty. or any other company, agency etc. to sell "Special Line" insurance policies in any of the States... they have to have certain "special" circumstances NOT COVERED, NOR OFFERED by the Full Line Carriers in that State. Special Line insurance carriers are very limited in what they are authorized to sell in any State, by very strict State Regulations on the insurance industry.

Limited use, mileage restrictions, secure storage, certain years of age etc. are all "Special Circumstances" that must be present - in order to sell "Special Line Insurance". None of which apply to Full Line Carriers Policies.

In exchange for the special limitations of Classic Car Insurance you get Agreed Values in case of a total loss, and premiums that are normally 1/4 as much or less.

FWIW,

Carl B.

Chris, Carl, Vicky...

Thanks for the article. It helps me get armed with info before my car is restored and I have to haggle with insurance companies.

I am also in the market for an "entry level" British roadster, and have to say that there are many restorable cars under 8k. I have not seen the cars Carl refers to as "basket cases" but $4500 should buy a restorable TR6, MGB etc.

Of course, my definition of "restorable" has been skewed by working on my Z....

I insure both my Z cars for a total of $160 per year I could not afford the second Z in my insurance was to high !!! Never had to make a claim as of yet even with three hurricanes !!!!!!Thank God !!!! Both hurricanes I kept my 2003 Sebring outside with my Z cars in the garage !!!

I've given up on Haggerty, they're too damn picky. You might as well have a damn trailor queen. No wonder they can offer insurance so cheap, you don't drive the car, nothing will happen. Big joke.

Hagerty (one g) was not designed for daily drivers. My Z is no trailer queen by any means but they don't really state a mileage limit. They restrict where you can go and still be covered but I don't have any desire to go grocery shopping or to work, etc. in my Z or my L320 pickup for that matter. That's what daily drivers are for. If I want to go to a car show, take a drive up the coast, or just take a drive, I can do that. I'm covered. I have no desire to do things that aren't fun or recreational in some way in those vehicles.

I have Haggerty on my 71.They told me I could not drive it to work which is no big deal for me. BUT, they told me that they did not restrict you from leaving the vehicle in a parking lot if you went into a store, or for that matter if you were buying gas and had to go inside to pee.

They did require to have a daily driver that was newer than a certain age. Although my daily driver when I signed up was a 79 ZX, they waived me because I also have a Dodge van (although its an 82.)

A little more fuel to the fire...this article from the new issue of Classic Motorsports magazine March 2006, issue 119, page 38. Seems like everyone is talking about the Z!

Thanks 26th-Z ... you just helped prove the value for money that are the Z cars idea I stated. Of all the cars on that list, it was the cheapest to afford and I am sure to maintain.

Now all we need to do is just buy every Z we see (like we aren't already trying) and turn them into a diamond-style market where we all control the flow  . Then we can start demanding better and higher prices for them! hehe ...
