Spark plug wires

As I am not really up to date with the (maintenance)history of my late 260Z I want to replace the basics of my ignition system. I will replace the points, distributor cap and the rotor with stock replacement parts from MSA.

For the spark plug and wires I want to go with some "performance" parts and I could need some advice on the way to go.

Spark plugs: Accel U-Groove or Nology Silverstone

Wires: Taylor Hi-pro 8mm or Magnecor Electrosports 8mm

Or if there is any experience with other brands out there, I appreciate any info.

Just a suggestion....regarding the spark plugs, use the NGK brand. They seem to work the best in these engines. If I remember correctly, the BP-6 (someone who remembers better than I please jump in here) heat range is what came in the stock engines. As far as the plug wires go, there are a number of good sets available.

It is just my opinion, and numerous opinions that have been relayed to me in the last year, to stick with the NGK plugs. You can use the extended electrode version, at least in my L24, for slightly better burn. Run a search on this site. There is more info on this topic than you'll care to read.

Used 1973 240Z for a search since that's what I drive.

I run MSD plug wires. Custom cut and fit. Plus really nice looking plug boots and dizzy terminals.

Unless you are really upgrading your entire ignition system I cant see why you would need to spend the money on Nology wires.

You can get NGK wires part number NE61, there is a guy on ebay that sells them for 19.95, dont know the name but if you just search the part number and NGK wires Im sure it will come up. Ive been buying from him, service is fast and excellent.

For plugs I would use either BPR6ES or BPR5ES.

If you would like to buy the real stock parts, then dont go to MSA, go to http://www.courtesyparts.com/ , its a Nissan dealer, they have everything you need for complete stock and performance parts.

I have found them much better to deal with too over MSA as well. Also you will get Nissan parts not whatever MSA puts into theyre box and sells to you from local stores.

Hey Bill, I think those are Taylor Red 8mm on that beast. Still good wires though. MSD Blaster Coil also. Just looked at your pictures to refresh my memory and yep, they're definitely Taylor wires.

In my most humble opinion, The stock equipment, NGK BP6ES for L24's and L26's and B6ES for L28's and good ol Blue NGK wires ARE high performance equipment. Everything else is more fluff.

I agree. Spend the money you save on the plugs and wires and put it into a better (electronic) ignition instead. Ditch the points.

agree with the rest on the plugs, stick with NGK's. too many horror stories about other brands to ignore.

i am happy with the magnecor 8mm wires. good spark delivery, engine smoothed out nicely and fires right up.

definitely agree with the points upgrade. i used the pertronix since it was relatively cheap (about $65-$70 IIRC) but mostly to maintain the OEM look, since it all fits under the cap and looks stock.

car starts and runs very smooth and you probably will never have to touch them again. i remember what a PITA replacing and setting points every 5-10k miles or so was. don't have any experience with MSD or Crane but i understand they are also a very good option.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I will go for the stock NGK plugs, the NE61 wire set, a new distributercap and rotor. And on top get me a pertronix ignitor set to replace the points and throw in a flame-thrower coil.
