Ebay H4 headlamps ...

Anyone out here bought any of the many H4 headlamps you see when you search Ebay. I would like to replace mine while I have all the parts off but I wanted some opinions before I dished out some cash.

I also wanted to know if I should upgrade my headlight harness when I upgrade my headlamps? Read something somewhere about a member who makes a plug and play relay but couldn't find the post or link.

Thanks for the help ...

1.) Harness ugrade is highly recommended, even if you don't use H4s. Dave used to make a relay harness, but doesn't any more. He has, though, posted all the instructions. Can't see how you missed the threads on them, a search for headlight and relay or harness will bring lots of hits. Anyway, here's the link. http://classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20016&highlight=headlight+relay

2.) I've never used the clear lens headlights such as sold on eBay, but I'm a big fan of H4s, and over the past 3 decades have personally used Marchal, Cibie, Hella, Bosch, Lucas, Wipac, and Stanley. My favorites were the Hella, followed closely by Bosch. One that I haven't used - but has been highly rated - are the Australian IPF's. I may try the IPF's in my 240Z when I get to that point.

I installed H-4 with the wiring up grade and the difference is fantastic. I am running 90/100s and now I can see great even when the streets are wet with rain and no street lights. I wouldent recommend them unless you do the wire upgrade. If you don't have the wiring you will destroy the switch and they are EXPENSIVE because so many are fried. Plus the fuse box will likely melt. Before I installed the wiring I did try the lights and within just a couple of min the fuse was so hot , I burned my finger when I touched it. I know these are the upper end on wattage bulbs that I am using . by the way I bought mine from escanlon . He bouhgt them on ebay and went another style for his car and I don't remember the maker , he might . Gary

your local auto parts store may carry APC, I know Kragens carries them, and APC does have a headlight wiring upgrade kit. If there is a Kragens by you, they can get it for sure.

Do they outclass Dave's headlight relay rewiring?
