It's out, baby!

Took the engine and trans out yesterday BY MYSELF, thank you very much...Only managed to spill about 1/2 cup coolant (unchecked heater hose--doh!) and a smidge of leftover trans fluid. No dings, scrapes, bent pipes or other injuries. Old motor is now mounted and being disassembled. Surprisingly, not many bolts are frozen, but a bunch of the screws on the hose clamps are.

Now the next 3 months will be spent inside the engine bay scrapin, grindin and sprayin--at least it beats the undercarriage!

Awesome! I am close behind. Did you end up using headbolts to secure the engine to the stand....or did you actually purchase some that would work. Was looking back through the threads about the bolts needed, and saw comments on head bolts. If you purchased them....where the heck did you find them with the correct hardness. Don't wanna snap those turkeys off. Anyway....good job fella.

I basically trusted the folks at NAPA. Told them what I was doing and they hooked me up with the right bolts with thread pitch/diameter to match the trans bell housing. The engine is not that heavy--250 lbs or so for the block, 50 lbs for the head, 40 lbs for the rest of the stuff. Ha Ha---hope it doesn't fall.:nervous:

The engine bay is pretty easy to refinish. I just jumped right in there, scraped off all the large collections of gunk, then spent a couple of weeks cleaning the nooks & crannies. Once clean, I spent another couple of weeks sanding to prepare for primer & paint.

I was lucky, no rust holes under the battery tray or in the frame rails. There were a few areas that had a bit of surface rust. I treated those spots with Rust Mort, followed by Eastwood's rust encapsulator primer paint. It's pretty much the same thing as POR-15.

Sounds like you've got a bit of work ahead of you, but I'm sure the results will be worth it!
