Just bought a 2/70 Z on EBay... the only catch is its for pickup only. I'm in Phoenix - the car is in St Louis. Looks like a road trip! Good thing I have a tow dolly. Bummer is the guy will not be there this weekend, so I have to go next (Superbowl weekend!). I don't want to put it off another week. Its a fixer upper but original. mapquest says its about 1500 miles... that will be a hardcore drive. lotsa caffeine i'm thinkin...

Are there any problems to using a tow dolly with a Z. I remeber reading something about disconection the rear diff. to prevent damage?

I am going to be doing a similar road trip when I move and would definaly like to know if there are any problems. If i can use a tow dolly I will be saving myself about 125 bucks for the trip.

I have towed my Zs across town many a time with no problems. I don't forsee any problems. I suppose I could just put it on the tow dolly rearend first. I use a come-along to put it on the dolly usually and the front end has an air dam so the hook I usually attach it to will be covered. I'll evaluate then I get there I guess.

Using a tow dolly should be fine on a manual transmission Z. For an automatic you'd need a full trailer or pull the driveshaft. Since there were no automatics that early, a dolly should be fine.

I use a tow dolly to take my car to the track. Longest is a 5 hour drive with no problems. Like mentioned above, its only auto trannys that you have to worry about.

Hey Kurt, If you tow that with a dolly (two wheels of the Z on the ground), it has to be registered with current plates. 1500 miles without seeing a cop would be a long way.

There's a great site on the Internet where users rate long-distance tow services. Many of the ones with high ratings have sites that can give you an instant quote. For a good service to tow that distance, it could probably be done for $600-800. That may or may not interest you...

Kurt I was bidding on the same car. Congratulations on your win. I think you got a great deal on the car. I just woke up from a 35 hr road trip in the last two days and I think it was worth every minute of it. Please be careful on your trip.Make sure to take plenty of tools with you and check your setup often.Last night at about 11:45 my hitch came loose at 70MPH and I just about lost it. Luckely the safety chains held on.No damages or injuries. Have a safe trip and keep us posted.
