What with the recent increase in posts to Funnybone, I've been trying to think of a way to filter that sub-forum out. You see, I don't seem to have time to come to the site for jokes. I have no issues with those who do have time for jokes, so I don't want to impose any limits on the Funnybone, it's just not my thing.

The bookmark I use to get to the site is Posts - Last 24 Hrs. This link returns all threads with any activity in the past 24 hours. Since I visit several times a day, this means I never miss anything.

But this search doesn't sort by forum, so the Funnybone threads are all mixed in. And since the titles don't always indicate that the post is humor, I find myself opening threads that I would normally not waste my time with.

So what I'd like to do, is to figure a custom search that does what the Posts - Last 24 Hrs does, but only to forums and sub-forums that I choose. That way I can see what I want without any impact on those who are having fun in the Funnybone. Any ideas?

Hi Arne, not trying to be sarcastic here and I'm sure you're aware of it, but each post does have, in addition to the title, both the author's name and the forum it was listed in. (sorry, can't help you with folks that post to the wrong forum!)

While jokes may not be your thing, other folks may not care about Racing Forums, 240K Forums, Conversions & Aftermarket Forums etc., but if they were posted in the last 24hrs then they qualify to be listed in that category.

I guess until or if the Site Gods decide to create a system to allow for a more detailed way to custom choose the posts of our choice/interests then you and I, along with everyone else will have to self filter.

Yup, I understand all that. I guess my problem is that if I see a thread title that looks like it might be relevent, I tend to click it without looking at what forum it was posted to. That's my problem, not the forums.

I'm not trying to change the way others use this board, I guess I'd just like more comprehensive search tools. For example, if I go to the advanced search I can filter to search the past 24 hours in only the forums I want to look at. But I must have a non-trivial keyword to use that filter. I can't pick my forums on a complete 24 hour search, which is what I'd really like to do. It may not be possible, but I thought I'd throw it out.

Arne:

The 24 hour listing shows 7 columns. 2 are Icon only, of the remaining 5, 2 are numeric only. That leaves 3; "Thread / Thread Starter"; "Last Post";"Forum".

So, disengage the auto-pilot click through, and take a quick second to look at the rightcolum, Forum, and do a mental reminder to NOT click on the Funny Bone ones.

A specialized search module might be available, but this is what to do in the meantime.

No sarcasm nor insult intended, but your post DOES come off that way, sorry to have wasted your time.

And no offense taken, either. I guess I just have a way of writing things here that people seem to take differently than what I intended. Something in my phrasing, I guess. Oddly enough, I don't seem to have this problem on other car related forums.

I guess I'll stick to straight tech and info questions from here on. Save everything else for more appropriate places.

Hi Arne,

I don't think you have a problem posting messages. Your point was well taken.

I've actually been considering making a few changes to the way our 'latest posts' block works on the main page. Since we have all kinds of different forums now, not all members want to see the content inside each one. There definitely a need to filter out some of the information contained inside the latest reports.

I'll see what I can do to make this easier to use. Right now all posts are included on the main page. I'm thinking about creating different blocks for the different main-categories... such as:

1) Latest posts in the Classic Z Forum

2) Latest Posts in the Classic 240K Forums

3) Latest Chit Chat posts

4) ETC

I'll put some work into this soon.

hey arne, if u filter the funny bone you'll miss out on the boob thread.LOL JK
True. But if I want boobs, I'll go to a site that specializes in boobs. (Plus many of us work where we can't be looking at boobs at work anyway. In fact, if I don't want the whole site blocked by the porn filter at work, I'd better not be looking at the boobs thread there.)
And you will miss out on everyone harrassing Bill.
Also true. But I don't come here to harass others, be harassed by others, or watch other people harass others. There is more of that going on here than on other forums I visit, but that is perhaps simply related to the fact that this forum has by far the largest membership of any that I visit.

It seems to me, the main reason that we visit this site is because it is BEST place for classic Z (and 240K) info. Period.

Mike, I'd welcome those new search features, but I don't want to put you to a whole lot of work on my account. If it involves a lot of time on your part it may not be worth it.

I actually had a similar thought about blocking that. Although i like all the funnybone threads, sometimes i browse the board from work, and i constantly have to look over my shoulder as to make sure i dont scroll Past BOOBS in the recent thread section with someone standing behind me.

Arne, your point is a valid one. Lately there have been a lot more jokes being posted (for better or for worse!) and I was actually getting worried myself about the other people who visit this site for information only. I have no problem with it as with a broadband connection I do the same as you - click on every thread with activity in the last 24 hours and simply close any threads I am not interested in.

I think it would be fantastic if you could block not only people but forums as well. Considering how well executed this website is Mike, that shouldn't be too hard?

In the mean time, I would suggest that if you are posting a joke, you could simply put "(JOKE)" at the beginning of the topic title. This would make it easier for those who don't want to see 5 jokes a day on a Z car site. I try to put 240K in the topic title of all of my 240K-specific threads for the same reason...
