Road trip sighting what is it

My first thought was a Jag also then when I saw the grill I wondered if maybe it was not some MG that I had never seen before. Great call Arne!!

Good spotting Arne - it does look a bit different. However, there were a number of variants of the Disco Volante... I would hazzard a guess that this is just a slightly different one. Most of the pictures on the Internet are of two cars - a hard top and a spider which are both owned by the Alfa Romeo museum just outside of Milano.

The reason I think this is more likely than say, an MG-based replica, is because of the obviously different details compared to the very "correct" bodywork. e.g. indicators. I'm going to do some research and hopefully get back to you on this one!! One thing is for certain, it would be very WEIRD for a genuine Disco Volante to be carried on the back of a trailer uncovered or anything... and without a polizia escort!!

While there certainly are differences to be noted between said vehicles, I'm not really seeing anything different in the headlight bezels that Arne mentions. However, trailer car (TC) does have a couple of round chrome peices directly under the headlights that museum car (MC) doesn't have.

In return, MC has what appears to be side marker lamps that are absent on TC. Also, the side chrome trim on TC in addition to being "fatter", appears to wrap around closer to the headlight than MC does.

Now as far as the back goes, the tail lights are obviously different. TC has what appears to be a raised chrome pop-up fuel lid (could be wrong here), while MC has a body colored lid.

What does all this mean? Arne could be correct and its a replicar or it could be just an earlier/later design as suggested by Alfa dog.

I knew immediately it was a Disco Volante, I am a closet Alfa fan and wannabe Ferrari owner. I also own an E-Type, so I know my historic Jags as well.

After looking at it, and knowing the rarity of the Disco Volante, I would agree with your supposition that this is a replica. There aren't many DV's running around. That has to be a one-off, I am completely unaware of any Alfa replica makers around..

By the way, only 3 were ever built, and 2 are owned by the Alfa Romeo Museo in Italy. There's no way a real DV would be towed in the open like that, a classic Alfa runs in the millions of dollars.

Ronnie, I see more muscle/collector/weird/ strange cars on my trips through GA, than any other state I have traveled. Wonder what it is. My question is how did that Z tow on a single axle trailer? Looked like it was at its max!!!

I guess it is because just about every man in Georgia ( half the women) learn to work on cars by the age of 10 in Georgia and most have a shade tree to work under. That keeps a lot of older cars running longer. The trailer pulls great now that that I removed that top rail on the front.I couldn't pull the car forward enough to get any tongue weight on it.Now I can pull it up 2 more feet and it rides perfect. Last night I got back from my fourth road trip in 5 weeks.No problems.
