montoya_fan01 Posted March 1, 2006 Share #13 Posted March 1, 2006 Fan clutches for 72-83 (Non-Turbo) are all the same. There are different fans for 72-73, 74-78, and 79-83I'm not sure what the differences are, but I'd think that if the diameter is comparible (to clear any fan shroud that you may have) you'd be OK
Arne Posted March 1, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted March 1, 2006 I've heard the ZX fans (79-83) are a different thickness, and don't fit in S30s. But I would think that the 74-78 fan should still fit my '71. Just wish I knew for certain before I start looking for used ones.
ZSaint Posted March 1, 2006 Share #15 Posted March 1, 2006 I know that the fans have different diameters. I bought a couple of them before I got one for my '71. I think the later Z's have a larger fan. Are you going to run a shroud? I think the shroud is the way to go if you have any heating problems. I bought one for a 280Z and it would not fit my 240 4-row rad. I bought one from a '72 but it did not have the bottom shroud piece. I am still looking. Arne Posted March 1, 2006 Author Share #16 Posted March 1, 2006 My car will end up with a 3 row radiator, no A/C and will be driven here in the mild Western Oregon climate. With a three row radiator, I shouldn't think I'll need the shroud. So a 260/280Z fan should be OK for me.

The 74-78 fans have the mounting surface at the front of the fan. The 79-83 280ZX as well as the 810/910 (Maxima) have the mounting surface towards the rear of the fan which makes the fan sit farther forward. There's more space between the engine and the radiator in the ZX/810/910.
dogma420 Posted March 16, 2006 Share #18 Posted March 16, 2006 Just a quick question....Z saint says<<(The water pump was hurting with a LOT of bearing play, however!) >>Is there a way to check for bearing play in advance of total failure or obvious coolant leaking from the pump? ie. do you shake the fan or ?Just curious, thanks guys. hls30.com Posted March 17, 2006 Share #19 Posted March 17, 2006 Grab it with one hand, give it a good orbital movement pivotal on the bearing. It you have ANY play, find a new one or start saving for a new radiator...Will
zed74 Posted March 17, 2006 Share #20 Posted March 17, 2006 we had a club member spend $1500 on repairing chassis rails/bonnet etc as a result of metal fan failing on a club run. The thing turned into a 'buzz-saw" and when halfway through the chassic rail before it when up into the bonnet.Get it off quick!
ZSaint Posted March 17, 2006 Share #21 Posted March 17, 2006 I turned my 240Z 6800 on the last day before I took the engine out. When I started removing the engine, I turned the fan over and it had 1/2" o play in it. I am surprised it did not come apart on that last rev-up. They are very easy to check. Just grap the metal fan and see how much play it has. It if does, change your waterpump and change to a plastic fan.
dogma420 Posted March 17, 2006 Share #22 Posted March 17, 2006 Thanks Will...I was just curious...when I replaced my water pump, I did it just because I had the radiator out to have a leak fixed and replaced it at the same time...don't think it was worn out. Another time I just replaced it when it started to leak....
Arne Posted March 17, 2006 Author Share #23 Posted March 17, 2006 Update - I picked up a good used plastic fan and clutch off eBay. It was from a 260Z, and does appear to be a bit bigger in diameter, but fits fine. I got a great deal, picked up for less than $16 including shipping. MarkDixon Posted March 17, 2006 Share #24 Posted March 17, 2006 Well that sounds like a great deal Arne. After reading this thread, I'm scared to drive my car. I have a 71' and the water pump leaks a little sometimes, and sometimes not.I have a metal fan.I guess I need to find the plastic type, and change that water pump. Thanks,Mark
